Clean Getaway Lyrics

I made my place by the door
I didn't know what i was waiting for
It felt just like home
Except no grass, no yard, no pictures hung

I could see across to the park
And there were friends
They were laughing hard
They looked just like my own
With no face, no name, no voice i know

I finally made it
I made a clean getaway
I finally made it
I made a clean getaway

I met someone at the bar
He had a great smile and a great heart
It felt just like love
Except no fear of losing and it wasn't tough

I finally made it
I made a clean getaway
I finally made it
I made a clean getaway
And i miss you
I miss you every single day

for some reason i feel like when she says that she finally made a clean get away that she's really just trying to convince herself of it. its just the lonely feeling of the song... its really not all that clean of a get away because its all so steril and her thoughts are always back to where she was from...

i miss you every single day

This is describing Maria's moving away from Alabama or maybe Athens, but in any event she's very happy about her getaway, even though it's not easy.

I think she is great at describing the loneliness and sense of loss and gain that comes with leaving your home behind. When you first get there, you are unsure that you wanna stay, and then certain things remind you of home. It's a harsh paradox because you are glad that you got away but at the same time you miss it.

Along with "Reply" this is one of my favourite songs on the CD. When I listen to it, it sounds like despite her second thoughts about getting out of whatever/wherever she is facing, she just sounds relieved... almost like it was a long time coming and there was no other option. I like that sense of relief. It's very refreshing.

i think this song is about moving and missing the people and places you left behind. she is glad to have moved on, but also missing what she left behind, especially one person. it seems like she is trying to start over and met new people (like the man at the bar) but it is hard. beautiful. one my favorites on lynn teeter

the part where she says, "And there were friends.../ They looked just like my own/With no face, no name, no voice i know"

i've been wondering. do you think she's saying that she doesn't really know her friends?

this song is amazing, i keep listening to it on repeat.

@daystoforget no. she simply means that she sees people and places that remind her of her home and of her friends. she lives somewhere new and everything is almost the same there, except it isn,t her home and she doesn't know anyone. sounds like she was trying to get away from a break up, but she's still in love with the guy that left her.

this is such a gorgeous song. maria has a way of making words/phrases that otherwise would be cliche, so... well, NOT cliche. favorite line: It felt just like love Except no fear of losing and it wasn't tough

and i agree with poncho524, there is irony in the clean getaway, because it doesnt seem clean at all if there is still something left "back there" to miss.

the part of this song that affects me the most is;

And i miss you I miss you every single day

everytime I hear that it cuts straight into me. The simplicity and honesty of it..
