The D.A. is dressed to the nines
In the mirror he practices all his lines
To his closing argument twelve hearts beat in favor
I'm guessing that he read the morning paper
The headline reads: "The man hangs, but the jury doesn't."

And everybody's looking for relief
The United States versus disbelief
Mothers cast tears on both sides of the aisle
From face to wall the body falls like bachelors or bad luck girls
Only breathing with the aid of the knife

Case open, case shut
But you could pay to close it like a casket
Baby boy can't lift his headache head
Isn't it tragic?

He glances at his pew seating seven to twelve stacked
On one to six the gallery is hushed
Boys in three pieces dream of girls' daring and bravado
The city streets in a cell not withstanding what we all know
Hang on the rope of baited breath
Whichever you prefer

And everyone's looking for relief
A bidding war for an old friend's grief
The calls for chique, the calls for charm
Another girl that's not aware but that can make you comprehend
Too well dressed for the witness stand
The best place for whichever headlines run

Case open, case shut
But you could pay to close it like a casket
Baby boy can lift his headache head
Isn't it tragic?

First class suit and tie
I'm desperate
Sing and die
Can talk my way out of anything
The foreman reads the verdict and the above-entitled actions
We find the defendant (guilty)

Case open, case shut
But you could pay to close it like a casket
Baby boy can left his headache head
Isn't it tragic?

Case open, case shut
That you could be the cause of that casket
Baby boy can left his head and he cares
Isn't it tragic?

I think this song is agains capital punishment.:

The DA is dressed to the nines In the mirror, he practices all his lines [DA=district attorny] To his closing argument, 12 hearts beat in favour [The jury agrees with him] I'm guessing he read the morning paper The headline reads "The Man Hangs" But the jury doesn't [He's found guilty, and hung. The jury is not hung, and they quickly agree on a verdict]

And everyone's looking for relief United States versus disbelief [The only reason we capitally punish people is because we need relief for our sorrow and revenge] Mothers cast tears on both sides of the aisle [We only create more loss by killing a murderer. One mother would be crying anyways, but now we took away another mother's child] Clear your throat and face the world The verdict falls like bachelors for bad luck girls Only breathing with the aid of denial [The jury avoids guilt by denying it]

Case open, and case shut But you could pay to close it like a casket [Like a casket=death. A good lawyer could easily kill someone] Baby boy can't lift his headache head Isn't it tragic? [There's nothing he can do. Literaly, he is dying]

He glances at his peers sitting 7 to 12 Stacked on 1 to 6 The gallery is hushed [Waiting for the verdict]

Boys in three pieces dream of grandstanding and bravado The city sleeps in a cell [The focus of the world is on this trial] Notwithstanding what we all know They hang on a rope or bated breath Whichever you prefer [Dead]

And everyone's looking for relief A bidding war for an old flame's grief [Looking for revenge for sorrow] The cause, the kid, The curse, the charm [This talks about the criminal]

There's not a word that can make you comprehend [It's insane] Too well dressed for the witness stand [It's not really a happy place to be] The press prays for whichever headline's worse [The press doesn't care about lives, only money] ...

Fresh pressed suit and tie Unimpressed birds sing and die [I think the birds refer to the media] Can talk my way out of anything The foreman reads the verdict: "In the above entitled actions, we find the defendent, Guilty, guilty, guilty" ...

    And yeah ...

He reuses the verse melody from the previous album's "Dirty Little Religion", the topics of the verses are all over the place, and he packs too many words into one line (goes to show...) and too few in another (it's pretty hard to find), and rhymes "Henley Regatta" with "Persona non grata", but gets away with it all as only he could.

This song is def a twin to "Unfair" (a song she has been quoted as saying is about falling in love with someone who is already in a relationship) so it is presumably about the same person. Given the references to buying an apartment and not being able to see her love interest "after tonight," it's most likely that she's moving away and she'll "wait a day to break the bad news" (i.e. notifying him that she's leaving once she's already gone). And, of course, the fact that she sees in him a fellow "idealist" and "dreamer" (terms commonly given to people with the INFP personality on the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)) portends that she'll always be left wondering if they would've been perfect together.

Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. It's painful to listen to so I'm glad the "Keith Richards of industrial metals" wised up and cleaned up. Well done sir.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
