So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
If you were falling, then I would catch you
You need a light, I'd find a match
'Cause I love the way you say good morning
And you take me the way I am
If you are chilly, here take my sweater
Your head is aching, I'll make it better
'Cause I love the way you call me baby
And you take me the way I am
I'd buy you Rogaine
When you start losing all your hair
Sew on patches to all you tear
'Cause I love you more than
I could ever promise
And you take me the way I am
You take me the way I am
You take me the way I am
You need a light, I'd find a match
'Cause I love the way you say good morning
And you take me the way I am
If you are chilly, here take my sweater
Your head is aching, I'll make it better
'Cause I love the way you call me baby
And you take me the way I am
I'd buy you Rogaine
When you start losing all your hair
Sew on patches to all you tear
'Cause I love you more than
I could ever promise
And you take me the way I am
You take me the way I am
You take me the way I am

This song is a little off. It appears to be a profession of unconditional love and desire to grow old with her lover, but in reality its passive aggressive and mean. If you buy someone Rogaine your not accepting them as they are. Your trying to cover them up. The equivilent line from a man would be "I'll sign you up for Jenny Craig, when you get fat". It would be insulting. And giving him her sweater? No she won't. He'll give her his sweater, because his is bigger and she can wrap herself up in it like a blanket. Her sweater on the other hand will too small to keep him warm or comfortable,he'll look ridiculous and feel humiliated and sulk plus he'll stretch it out of shape, which will make her mad and they won't have sex for 2 weeks.
