Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.

The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere.
In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. "I couldn't bring myself to call, except to call it quits." I don't think he ever felt good enough for her. He was always posting journals about wanting to call back home (probably her) but it being too late at night and people (she) might be asleep. So the only time he could ever "call" her is metaphorical, since they called it quits.
"The tombstones were waiting, they were half engraved." This reflects the starting point of their relationship (probably the most recent). "They knew it was over, just didn't know the date." The relationship was over before the two decided to call it quits.
"I cast a spell over the West to make you think of me the same way I think of you." That's pretty easy to understand. He finally made her feel the same way he felt about her, one way or another.
"Best friends, ex-friends to the end. Better off as lovers, not the other way around." Those two are best friends, and they went through rough times, probably points where they were 'ex-friends'. He finds they're better off as lovers, or best friends, not as ex-friends (to the end).
Well that was analyzed a lot. Haha. That's just what I got out of it. (:
