Before Time Began Lyrics

Before Time Began

The daylight fades and the stars comes out
But there’s never much to talk about
Another day goes rushing by and here we are just wondering why
We have to belong with a sense of purpose
That’s all we need, without them we’re worthless
Ah, we’ve come so far, hmm, but then again
All we see is more of the same
It’s getting crowded here we agree no doubt
Oh dear brother what’s it all about?

Hey you over there, why don’t you throw down your spear?
We all need some help right now
Where are we going from here?
The way things are working out
It won’t be too long before we have to move
Better start thinking about it while there’s still time to choose

Every day of my life I discover
Someone murdering my sisters and brothers
In the name of some god or another
What do you know?

For the first precious few it’s time to go
What might have been we’ll never know
All those bad ideas became the law
Oh yes, we’ve forgotten what we’re looking for
All of you angels, it’s time to gather your wings
Leave it all behind you won’t need any of those things
We’re going on through the darkness hand in hand
To step into the future
Before time began

And for those who remain with your chosen gods
May your prayers be answered

Easily the best song on the whole album. I may interpret too much into it, but I think that it has more than one meaning, I'll explain. The title suggests it's about the past, maybe a group of prehistoric humans facing the hardships of their time. Most of the song up to the last 7 lines or so is a sad and angry look at the current state: people living in a state of dull day-to-day survival, conflicts, superstitions and mistakes having shaped a hostile environment. The last part however contrasts that negativity with something else: The promise of a future for those of mankind who endure, underlined by strong guitar and organ chords. Now here's where the multi-leveledness I mentioned comes into play: The whole song can be applied to just about any era of humanity, up to and including our own time where many people feel the way described in the song. Also here's where for me, the true meaning of the song lies, and what makes it so strong: That the promise of the future is for us too, that we're not at the end of human history but at the beginning of a new time and that we will go on through the hardships, together, to a greater tomorrow. The final notion isn't hard to understand. Without any ill will towards believers, those that embrace the promise can finally leave the gods and superstitions behind them that have caused humanity so much problems for so long.
