This song is about Robin's true to life insecurities about himself and his relationship with Paula Patton. I see racial tones, i see social tones amongst other physical and social tones. He is white she is black, she may like to hang out with the party crowd, he doesn't. She is a party girl and he isn't a party guy. Whenever they might have a disagreement, she says its because they are different. He feels that the reason why he can't make her love him like he wants her to love him is because of he himself. His insecurities really show on this song. He doesn't think she loves him or thinks she is cheating (its a rumor she does cheat with other women though). He thinks that her other people in her life influence to be different and he thinks these other people get in the way of her seeing that they want very much the same things.
He was on Oprah and he said it had to do with awards and things like that and just in general how everybody feels that they have to change or be different in order to be loved.
