Shame on the Moon Lyrics

Until youve been beside a man
You dont know what he wants
You dont know if he cries at night
You dont know if he dont
When nothin comes easy
Old nightmares are real
Until you ve been beside a man
You dont know how he feels

Once inside a womans heart
A man must keep his head
Heaven opens up the door
Where angels fear to tread
Some men go crazy
Some men go slow
Some men go just where they want
Some men never go

Oh blame it on midnight
Ooh shame on the moon

Everywhere its all around
Comfort in a crowd
Strangers faces all around
Laughin right out loud
Hey watch where your goin
Step light on old toes
Cause until youve been beside a man
You dont know who he knows

Oh blame it on midnight
Ooh shame on the moon
Oh blame it on midnight
Ooh shame on the moon

I'm at a loss when I try to find a meaning for all the three parts of this song. The first sounds addressed to women whereas the second to men. The first says "woman, if you don't stay beside your man you won't understand his feelings or who he really is, so a woman's task is be beside your man. The second part seems addressed to men: when a woman loves you, man (once inside a woman's heart), you man must be faithful to her (a man must keepo his head) even though temptations are all around you ("heaven opens up the door where angels fear to tread" sounds to me something like a sinful temptation - why should angels fear to tread in heaven if this heaven were holy and pure?). Once tempted by sex with other women some men go crazy and ruin their life and their woman's (some men go crazy), some others are careful (go slow), some others don't care at all (go just where they want) and finally some give it up at all (never go). Then the chorus seems to find the guilt of all these temptations and mess coming from them in midnight and the moon, symbols of languid love - men are lustful because not because they want to be like that but becuase of external involuntary influence (sex pulsions) symbolized by the moon and the night. Third part, harder for me to understand, and I leave it to you and ask for your help: everywhere it's all around: IT may refer to all that has been said so far - some people find comfort in a laughing crowd as they can't find it in their partner (either because he's unfaithful or because she doesn't stay beside his man). Then it says " don't quickly judge other people by starting from your old prejudice ("step light on old toes") because if you haven't been beside, near a man, you know nothing about the person he knows (you don't know who he knows) - help! I don't understand this!

@thestamp You nailed it, even alluding to human nature to blame bad outcomes on nearly anything but themselves. And Angels do fear to tread literally and figuratively.

@thestamp Dude...you \'nailed it\' (Thumbs Up)...you\'re a Blessed interpreter. Gonna post it near the \'the Memorial of passed-on Girl/Wife\'???? :(. She passed March 2020...always knew of Seger growing up, but just came across this \'Beloved tune\' just recently, to caption FB post of mine, with the YouTube link to this song ---to show and share where Im at ????. Thanks for this interpretation

My Sad Tearful Emoji disappeared to "????"...FYI

man no one's commented on this song? wtf

at any rate, it obviously has something to do w/ love. the chorus sounds like he's chastising ppl who would blame their bad (presumably sexual) decisions on getting caught up in the moment, or getting carried away or something. but i really have no idea

@no1uno Thanks \'no1uno\'...YES on that first part, you mentioned. :( ....I barely came across this song this past week, I always knew of Seger as a kid, but this song captioned my feelings of my girl passed-on :(\r\n

This song is SEDUCTIVE, but I'm still trying to figure it out. The first part seems to intimate that men have problems showing all of their feelings publicly, but during/after sex is one place where they can do it. That is one motivation for them to be promiscuous/seek one-night stands. The "once inside a woman's heart" refers to a relationship with a woman. It can be heavenly, but also fraught with issues/problems, and not all men can deal with it, so one-night stands can be simpler. Anonymity/strangers can be easier to deal with, so long if a few more sensitive issues don't come up. All in all, I feel the writer is trying to say that people have one-night stands/casual sex for a variety of complicated reasons, yet blame it on being caught up in the moment, too much to drink, etc. Yeah, it's all the moon's fault.

My Opinion

@bks Thanks bks for putting time into ---it Helped. \r\n

The first verse is a perspective given by man in an attempt to educate women on the natural insticts of men and how to define the different attributes and /or shortcomings which will help define a relationship.

The second verse indicates that the nature of women are nuturers and is a warning to women that not all men are compatible with a lasting relatoionship.

The third verse is a warning to those who do decide to make a commitment to be aware of outside influence that could and most often can sabotage relationships.

The chorus represent a positve way to deal with the failure of relationship and/or the inability to enter into a relationshp with a particular individual. In other words accept that some things arent meant to be. Chalk it up to the heat of the moment, take in stride, move on and never give up.

Just an interpretation from me... I have known this song for some decades. I think literary texts (song lyrics included) have many different possible interpretations. I see this song as having three very different but connected parts. In the first part, he talks about what women may find while trying to relate with men. In the second, he talks about what men may find while trying to relate with women. In the third, it looks to me a little like a description of the situation with men and women after having related to each other for some time. So, up to strangers laughing out loud, it seems to me that he is depicting possibly a man in some pain perhaps for having been cheated upon, or for having been forsaken, etc. Right after it, it looks like the description of a woman coming back home after cheating. I see "step light on old toes" as a person tiptoeing, avoiding making sounds. Anyway, the parts of the lyrics are masterly crafted, in my opinion, and are superbly woven together.

Well...In English classes, I was never too good at deciphering the Allegory of the Metaphors. (I'm only a Doctor-after all.) But, this Rock Waltz (which is actually a cover from another artist) reminds me in style of Neil Young's "Harvest."

My Opinion

I agree the first part is what a woman needs to be aware of to understand a man. The second part is the manner a man can relate, or not relate at all, to a woman. Emotions have no logic and so angels will fear to tread. Both require a consideration of the other's past, and how that affects the way they are now. The third condition is "strangers in the night" when you jump into a relationship without knowing the other's past. You may step on old toes: the effects of old relationships and not be aware of how small a world it is when prior relationship types cross paths. Love this song and it's haunting lyrical message of human nature.
