My Gift of Silence Lyrics

If I compiled all my crimes and my lies into amnesty
Would you come back to me?
The smile on my lips is a sign that I don't hear you leaving me
And I don't hear my own soul scream

I'll read your lips, watch your scarf play at your hips
And I know it's true
But I don't hear him call to you

Don't blame yourself
Don't change yourself
Just wanna be over you, see, and feel numb
Don't hate yourself

If I compiled all my crimes and my lies into amnesty
Would you come back to me?
The smile on my lips is a sign that I don't hear you leaving me
And I don't hear my own soul scream

Don't blame yourself
(don't blame yourself)
Don't change yourself
(don't change yourself)
Just wanna be over you, see, and feel numb
(don't hate yourself)
Don't hate yourself

I thought it was "Just wanna be over you (over you see), safe in love."

Also, incredibly depressing track. Amazing, but depressing.

"I just wanna be over you, see, if you'll love" is not correct. Correct line is: "I just wanna be, over you see, and feel numb"

This is the nr.1 Blackfield song for me personally. Love the arrangement and the harmonies. Not really sure about the lyrical meaning, but I don't think there's any doubt that it's a lovesong in some way.

@gavharr Actually it's "I just wanna be over you, see you and feel numb", you can hear it in one of the live videos on YT. And yes, definitely a love song, and a pretty sad one too.

It sounds to me like he is in a relationship with a girl and they've grown apart, or maybe even just secretly in love with his friend ("I'll read your lips, watch your scarf play at your hips" << watching her longingly), but he feels like she is slipping away from him ("I'll read your lips, watch your scarf play at your hips" << watching her from a distance). I think he realises she likes somebody else, but he can't see why she would because this other guy's not even interested in her as a person ("And I know it's true, But I don't hear him call to you" << whereas he IS calling to her, she just can't hear it).

As for the "Don't blame/change/hate yourself", I don't really know, but maybe he figures she'll realise one day that she was wrong, but he knows it's not up to him to change her mind, only she can do that.

Well I could be compleeeetely wrong! But let me know what you think.

My Interpretation

Ok so I read everything that's on here and I could be wrong but I think differently. This song is about someone who is in love with someone but the other person is drifting away. They both know this and the person singing is really upset about it but he will let her leave because that is the best thing for her and he loves her. But he hopes the best for her and he is hoping she will be ok without him. "Don't blame yourself" "Don't change yourself" "don't hate yourself". Here he is wishing that she won't get hurt by leaving him, that she will stay the same, and she won't hate herself for loosing him. He overall wants her to be happy and he knows leaving him is the only way that can happen so that's what he does

Oh! by the way, the song is about:

a boy, his mother, death, and his mother's ghost

My gift of silence. one of my favorites from blackfield. this song is personal to me. but the idea is pretty clear.

you want to be close to someone when actually it's a love interest!.... My gift of silence is a stance on these kind of situations in life.

The yin yang of when you care for another. It's also a reminder to not deny your true feelings for a love interest, that they need to be expressed.

Of course there is guilt involved. Both sides of the fence when the answer is no, but feelings are real. friendship preserves the reality, don't hate your self, don't change yourself.

Bit of a downer, but it's beautiful.
