Mama Wolf Lyrics
When I'm in the woods
I know what to call you now
When I'm in the woods
I know what to call you now
Hey Mama Wolf
Hey Mama Wolf
Well maybe the mountains know what
To call you now
Maybe the mountains know what
To call you now
Hey Mama Wolf
Hey Mama Wolf
When I'm in a womb
I know what to call you now
And when a belly blooms
I know what to call you now
Hey Mama Wolf
Hey Mama Wolf
Well I can say Marie
I know what to call you now
Swimming in the sea
I know what to call you now
And when you swim with me
I know what to call you now
And when you're under me
I know what to call you now
I know what to call you now
When I'm in the woods
I know what to call you now
Hey Mama Wolf
Hey Mama Wolf
Well maybe the mountains know what
To call you now
Maybe the mountains know what
To call you now
Hey Mama Wolf
Hey Mama Wolf
When I'm in a womb
I know what to call you now
And when a belly blooms
I know what to call you now
Hey Mama Wolf
Hey Mama Wolf
Well I can say Marie
I know what to call you now
Swimming in the sea
I know what to call you now
And when you swim with me
I know what to call you now
And when you're under me
I know what to call you now

Not sure exactly what this means. It just really depends on what he believes the wolf is symbollizing. "Mama Wolf"..I'm no expert on wolves..lol.. but assuming wolves are protective of their cubs, maybe he's talking about the vicousness this "Marie" will acquire to protect her children.
..Maybe?
I think this is about how you can find truths--especially of love, while you're in nature's haven. I guess you learn to appreciate things more--things like a mother's love. There's a clarity about losing yourself in the wilderness--you become closer to yourself perhaps, more aware of your origins.
Don't really know exactly what a female wolf represents exactly in this song, but it could be referencing Roman mythology--the twin sons of a Mother Wolf - Romulus and Remus? Though I doubt it. Don't feel like overanalyzing something like this since I feel like my first feeling defines it for me.
The song to me seems like an appreciative 'ode to' the kind, nurturing qualities of women. He deals gently with the beauty of the feminine being in general. The mother, the lover, the person.
I agree with Suclid003. Once, when I ate wild fungus in the woods, I realized that all people and things are derived from nature, everything. I once heard Devendra say this in an interview. Maybe this is what he is trying to do with this song, with the exception of turning Mother Earth into Mama Wolf. I'm not sure.
I agree with the nature references, but my feeling is he is directing it not towards nature itself but a girl who is beautiful and very in touch with nature and all that's natural; so he has nicknamed this girl, Marie, "Mama Wolf".
