Shattered Lyrics

Yesterday I died, tomorrow's bleeding
Fall into your sunlight
The future's open wide beyond believing
To know why hope dies
Losing what was found, a world so hollow
Suspended in a compromise
The silence of this sound is soon to follow
Somehow sundown

And finding answers
Is forgetting all of the questions we call home
Passing the graves of the unknown

As reason clouds my eyes with splendor fading
Illusions of the sunlight
And the reflection of a lie will keep me waiting
A love gone for so long

This day's ending
Is the proof of time killing all the faith I know
Knowing that faith is all I hold

And I've lost who I am
And I can't understand
Why my heart is so broken
Rejecting your love
Without love gone wrong
Lifeless words carry on
But I know, all I know
Is that the end's beginning

Who I am from the start
Take me home to my heart
Let me go and I will run
I will not be silenced
All this time spent in vain
Wasted years, wasted gain
All is lost, hope remains
And this war's not over

There's a light, there's the sun
Taking all the shattered ones
To the place we belong
And his love will conquer all

Yesterday I died
Tomorrow's bleeding
Fall into your sunlight

To actress15 - surely this song isn't so obviously religious that it can't be interpreted in more that one way? Whether you look at it as being religious or not, in the end, it's still speaking about the same message - it is about losing yourself and refusing love, before finally allowing someone in your heart, and that someone could be either a person or God. Either way, it can mean essentially the same thing, and neither meaning detracts from how beautiful and powerful the song is. A song only ever means what you make it mean, right?

For me, this is a song about hope in love - it's about being broken and hurt, so much that you can't take the idea of accepting love again, which is a lonely, miserable place to be in. You don't want to accept love from anyone because love is what will hurt you. But then, there's a revelation - you find a love that you want to accept. It's going to hurt, allowing it into your heart, but it gives you a hope - the light at the end of the tunnel, if you will. It's a painful process to accept it, but in the end, it's a healing process and it's what will repair your shattered heart. This song is about that realisation and taking the first step into accepting love, and seeing the journey ahead and being willing to take it for love's sake.

To me, yes, that love means God's love, which will conquer, and will heal all the shattered ones out there.

But I don't think that this version of the song is so obviously religious that it excludes people who aren't religious from finding meaning in it, and I don't think that it should ruin the power of the song. My best friend, who first played this song to me, is an atheist, and we both find it equally moving, and equally beautiful. From either point of view, it's still about love and hope, which can come from a million and one different places.

My Opinion

@laurevere That actually makes sense when you think about the words they used, honestly, I have no idea why, but this song makes me cry.

I disagree. I think this version is far more powerful and emotional. I think it's about holding on to your last thread of hope and trusting God to carry you when you can't walk anymore. It's really beautiful and has helped me through a lot.

I found the music sheet for this song, and at the bottom was this quote from Hodges:

"You wake up and you don't know where you are, what time it is, how long you've been out, what happened to you last, and everything is different. the people you love are gone or changed, the things you could rely on are erased, the world you knew not only does not exist, but didn't seem to really ever exist. You just woke up from a dream to find that everything until now was the dream. Think Sydney Bristow at the end of season two of Alias waking up in Hong Kong, think the beginning of the Flight of the Navigator, think Adam and Eve morning one out of the garden. This song is not about the journey home, but it is about fixing your eyes to home. It is about standing up and taking the first step."

I agree with Monroe6. As much as I like this version, I can't stand that religion was thrown into it. I think this song is much more beautiful if it's about losing yourself, refusing love, and then finally allowing someone into your heart.

My Opinion

@actress15 boohoo it is about religion, I'm not religious but I love it for carrying that message, I'm in alternative media, the exposing of the sick disgusting truth the world has become, this song brings hope to those who are alone in a world of sleep walking sheep. So get over yourself that religion is apart of a beautiful song, it is the religion part that makes it beautiful. And I'm not even religious.

And finding answers Is forgetting all of the questions we call home Passing the graves of the unknown

i really like these lines. i love that its calling the questions 'home' because so many of us want to know the answers but are too scared to try to find out. or cannot be bothered to make an effort and they are so comfortable not knowing.

'the graves of the unknown' i think refer to innocence, and once you find out how the world really is, you miss being oblivious to all the bad stuff. the word 'grave' being associated with mourning- and maybe mourning the innocence and purity as a child. this song is so true.

it has really hopeful tones. i love it :)

i dont know why but i cant help to think of the Australia, American and every other soldier fighting in the war today.

just the lyrics put the image of them fighting and the song goes on.

"And I've lost who I am And I can't understand Why my heart is so broken Rejecting your love Without love gone wrong Lifeless words carry on But I know, all I know Is that the end's beginning"

"and ive lost who i am" this plants the image of a soldier sitting against a wall crying over all the blood loss, and what war has made him to be like.

"And I can't understand Why my heart is so broken" cause war is his job, and the killing of the enemy has left him heartbroken and confused.

"rejecting you love without your love gone wrong" the solider(s) could have lost a loved one (wife/GF/family member) having the loved one reject his/her love without it going wrong.

"Lifeless words carry on But I know, all I know Is that the end's beginning" the crying words from the enemy soldiers "lifeless words curry on" replying and carrying on in his mind"

"Who I am from the start Take me home to my heart Let me go and I will run" now these lyrics paint the picture of a soldier want to go back to who he/she was before the war "who i am from the start" and want to go back to his family/loved one/children "take me home to my heart" and how he has to stay there against his will and if he had the chance to go home he will run "let me go and i will run"

now this is what i think the song is about, and most likely isnt.

NO COMMENTS?!?!?! AHHH!

okay i'll be the first.... I love this song It pretty much describes my life right now.

My interpretation is that this is about a person who has lost themselves and they dont know who they are anymore and they are so shattered and rejecting everyone and God's love and they look to God for answers thats why it says "His love will concur all"

Trading Yesterday would prob. be one of my favorite bands

this is such a beautiful song! I completely agree with Leasuhhx11, it's about losing yourself and god is the only answer left. But it's also about not giving up! this song helped me a lot when I was depressed...I want to say to everyone who is going through depression or is just having a hard time right now, don't give up! Because once you've conquered it, everything will be so much more beautiful than ever before!!

I definitely see that hint of God in there, but I tend to think of God as much less religious than others tend to think of him. I feel that, in this song, the reference to God is more as realizing that something is out there, something grand. And that in itself is part of healing. It's part of hope. The chorus is that revelation that hope never dies, and that God and his love are always out there, so matter how lost and broken you feel. It's a really powerful song.

My Interpretation

Well said !

This song is about the battle in the mind between faith and reason.

As reason clouds my eyes with splendor fading Illusions of the sunlight And the reflection of a lie will keep me waiting A love gone for so long

This day's ending Is the proof of time killing all the faith I know Knowing that faith is all I hold

As time passes, his faith is fading yet the song changes at this point he begins to fight this downward spiral in which love (and presumably faith) ultimately conquer.

Powerful song and relatable in so many ways. Bravo David.
