The Arrangement Lyrics

You could have been more
Than a name on the door
On the thirty-third floor in the air
More than a credit card
Swimming pool in the backyard

While you still have the time
You could get away and find
A better life, you know the grind Is so ungrateful
Racing cars, whiskey bars
No one cares who you really are
You're the keeper of the cards
Yes I know it gets hard
Keeping the wheels turning
And the wife she keeps the keys
She is so pleased to be
A part of the arrangement

You could have been more
Than a name on the door
On the thirty-third floor in the air
More than a consumer
Lying in some room trying to die
More than a credit card
Swimming pool in the backyard
You could have been more than a name on the door
You could have been more than a name on the door
You could have been more
You could have been more
You could have been more

So beautiful. I think it's about fighting that kind of insignificant suburban life that so many people end up living.

Another prescient song by Joni. Released in 1970, it foretold the change from the cultural idealism of 1960s and early 1070s to the decade of greed in the 1980s, the song warns that consumerism funded by over-leveraging credit is not good. She implores the person who she wrote the song for to find a better life and do something meaningful (and I think Joni would have preferred if he did it without his wife) :-) I hear this song, look around me and see the lyrics as an epitaph for some baby boomers.

It's about the "other woman"

A man has a wife and a girlfriend. Both know about the other, but they don't care. The wife doesn't want to have sex with her husband anymore, but she doesn't want to leave her comfortable married life, so she's happy that the girlfriend keeps him occupied.

It's an arrangement that works for them.
