It's about the end of this corrupted world and how close this time is from nowadays. Most of the human race will die with war, famine, diseases, and catastrophes and in the end only a few will survive and those will remember what human race did wrong in the past so they will learn from it and not repeat again.

They fairly well explained what this one is about on their website, it was made for a trailer for the "Spellborn" mmorpg game they are involved in. Its about a visious creature that people were able to drive out, but as they started expanding their borders as people always do, they started getting attacked again. Or something to that effect.
yeah they also used the story of spellborn the come up with the lyric, they used some parts of the story of spellborn to form this story, but since i don't know the game i don't know wich one. sharon said that in a interview on www.faceculture.nl

I think that this song is about murder and the haunting guilt or other consequences that ensue. "I feel they're getting closer; their howls are sending chills down my spine," for instance, indicates that the memory or spirits of the murder victims are closing in on and tormenting the murderers. This makes sense because most of Within Temptation's songs [that I have heard] seem to entail an analysis of sin.
I don't know why, but this song always brings an image of two villages or tribes, one attacks the other and the other seeks retribution causing an endless cycle of killing and bloodshed, the song seems to be question the point of war and violence.
I always saw the song as a mix between being a werewolf and being chased by them.
I think this song is about warewolves. For one thing, the title. "The HOWLING"... it's about warewolves and their intent to kill. Second, "The sun is rising, the screams have gone, too many have fallen, few still stand tall. Is this the ending of what we've begun? Will we remember what we've done wrong?", It means once the sun rises the werewolf form goes away and many people have been killed. For the "Will we remember what we've done wrong?" part.. it means once they are back in human form will they remember what they have done wrong, which is killed so many people. It's plain obvious this is about werewolves if you just read the lyrics.
