Moments Lyrics

I was coming to the end of a long, long walk
When a man crawled out of a cardboard box
Under the E Street Bridge
Followed me onto it
I went out halfway across
With that homeless shadow tagging along
So I dug for some change
Wouldn't need it anyway
He took it looking just a bit ashamed

He said, "You know I haven't always been this way
I've had my moments
Days in the sun
Moments
I was second to none
Moments
When I knew I did what I thought I couldn't do
Like that plane ride
Coming home from the war
That summer my son was born
Memories like a coat so warm
A cold wind can't get through
Looking at me now you might not know it
But I've had my moments"

I stood there trying to find my nerve
Wondered if a single soul on Earth
Would care at all
Miss me when I'm gone
That old man just kept hanging around
Looking at me, looking down
I think he recognized that look in my eyes
Standing with him there I felt ashamed

I said, "You know, I haven't always been this way
I've had my moments
Days in the sun
Moments
I was second to none
Moments
When I knew I did what I thought I couldn't do
Like the day I walked away from the wine
For a woman who became my wife
In a love that, when it was right
Could always see me through
Looking at me now you might not know it
But I've had my moments"

I know somewhere 'round a trashcan fire tonight
That old man tells his story one more time

He says, "I've had my moments.
Days in the sun
Moments
I was second to none
Moments
When I knew I did what I thought I couldn't do
Like that cool night on the E Street Bridge
When a young man almost ended it
I was right there
Wasn't scared a bit
And I helped to pull him through
Looking at me now you might not know it

Looking at me now you might not know it
I've had my moments
I've had my moments
I've had my moments
I've had my moments

It's pretty simple that it's about a man who is about to commit suicide by jumping off of the bridge. Then a homeless man comes along, and through meeting eachother the homeless man saves his life. They both reminisce about the good times in their lives and what they've gone through up until that point. And they save eachother. It is just a great song.

I just realized today what this song was about.. it gave me the chills.. but it's a great song.. it's basically saying that even a man that has nothing at all in life still has a lot to live for.. even when life seems to be at it's worst, you still have a lot to live for... a really beautiful song

Ziggy, I completely understand...I nearly cried when I first really listened to this song and got its meaning. It's amazing how one life can touch another, and that's exactly that "Moments" is about. It's about two men who have nothing - one that's about to commit suicide and another that's homeless. Both of them recall the best times in their lives and share them with each other - voila, they're both forever changed thereon and the suicidal man (narrator of the song) obviously does not kill himself. This song tells a wonderful, well-rounded story!

This song has several meanings and you can read into which is most applicable to you and your own situation. That's what makes it so appealing to multiple listenings... every time you hear it, you get something different out of it. Like Ziggy45, I got chills when I figured out what the song meant, but for me it was a different revelation. Beyond the basic story, one of the messages the song sends is that ANYONE can be a hero -- even a person who's close to the bottom of society's ladder (aka, the homeless man). Someone who most people either ignore or try to forget about doesn't hold a grudge against society but instead, extends hope to an otherwise hopeless man and ends up saving his life, a true heroic act in the most pure form. Kudos to Emerson Drive for a stellar performance and also to the writers (Dave Berg, Annie & Sam Tate) for assembling such a powerful and universal message in a 4 minute song.

The meaning of this song took me a while but now i know what it means. A man was going to kill himself by jumping off the E Street Bridge. A homeless man fallowed him. The other man gave him some change. The homless man starts telling him all the great things in his life. The other man tells him the same thing. The homless man saved the other man's life!!!

(I LOVE THIS SONG!)

This song seems so simple when you listen to it, but once it's over you realize how much more complex it really is. This song makes me cry every time i listen to it. It's just a beautiful song.
