The Freshman Lyrics

When I was young I knew everything
and she a punk who rarely ever took advice
Now I'm guilt stricken, sobbing with my head on the floor
Stop a baby's breath and a shoe full of rice, no

can't be held responsible
'Cause she was touching her face
I won't be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place

For the life of me I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and we'd never compromise
For the life of me I cannot believe we'd ever died for these sins
We were merely freshmen

My best friend took a week's vacation to forget her
His girl took a week's worth of valium and slept and
Now he's guilt stricken sobbing with his head on the floor
Thinks about her now and how he never really wept he says

I can't be held responsible
'Cause she was touching her face
I won't be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place

For the life of me I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and we'd never compromise
For the life of me I cannot believe we'd ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen

We've tried to wash our hands of all of this
We never talk of our lacking relationships
And how we're guilt stricken sobbing with our heads on the floor
We fell through the ice when we tried not to slip, we'd say

I can't be held responsible
'Cause she was touching her face
I won't be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place

For the life of me I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and we'd never compromise
For the life of me I cannot believe we'd ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen

For the life of me I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and we'd never compromise
For the life of me I cannot believe we'd ever died for these sins
We were merely freshmen
We were merely freshmen
We were only freshmen

this is a pretty sweet song. i'm not going to be the stereotypical idiot that says "oh i'm surprised that no ones commented on this song yet". its a good one. i personally think its about stupid choices little kids make when they get to high school because, i mean its high school. its their first year at a new building and their last stop before they go away to college.the first and thrid stanza are about the same two people. how she had a kid or abortion. the fourth ones about the same thing, only the girl ended up ODing and dying. then he thinks about it and crys because he never really caredd for her. thats just my take on it

This is what i think the song is about... He might not be a freshman in highschool by the way, maybe college, it doesnt really matter..

When I was young I knew everything (when he was younger, he figured he knew a lot)

and she a punk who rarely ever took advice (she was a punk who never took advice)

Now I'm guilt stricken, sobbing with my head on the floor (presently, he's sad and crying how things are now)

Stop a baby's breath and a shoe full of rice, no (shoe full of rice means a wedding, so him and this punk girl ended up getting married)

can't be held responsible 'Cause she was touching her face (he wont take responsibility that he makes her cry)

I won't be held responsible She fell in love in the first place (he wont take resposibility that he made her fall in love with him)

For the life of me I cannot remember What made us think that we were wise and we'd never compromise (he cant remember why they got married and never comprimised for something else)

For the life of me I cannot believe we'd ever died for these sins We were merely freshmen ((they took vows saying they wouldn't part till death and they were very young)

My best friend took a week's vacation to forget her His girl took a week's worth of valium and slept (his friend is in the same situation and they're disstrought about it)

and Now he's guilt stricken sobbing with his head on the floor Thinks about her now and how he never really wept (his friend is sad and crying and maybe felt he never thought about his situation)

he says I can't be held responsible 'Cause she was touching her face I won't be held responsible She fell in love in the first place (his friend also wont take responsiblity about his wife crying and how she fell in love with him)

We've tried to wash our hands of all of this (They tried to make things better)

We never talk of our lacking relationships (they never talked about their break up or they just dont talk about their unhealthy marrage)

And how we're guilt stricken sobbing with our heads on the floor (they're always sad how things are)

We fell through the ice when we tried not to slip, (this one's a tough one... i think the ice resembles their relationship, Their relationship wasnt stable like thin ice. when they got married maybe meant to test the ice, and they were too preoccupied on not straying from eachother...slipping... but instead they fell through the ice, meaning they relized they weren't right for eachother, so they either broke up, or put up with what they have...)

well i dunno... what do you think?

I lived an almost exact parallel to this song...it goes like this...I am putting it in a way as not to exactly refer it back to my story...example greater details left out.

The freshmen refers to position in life. As in being young. The first two lines refer to personalities of the couple. They had a baby him realizing too late that he could not handle the responsability. They were engaged. The guy who knew everything was scared so was she. No compromise, she was still in love with him though he was falling out of love with her feeling the baby...

oops I forgot touching her face she was crying.

Never heard this cover done, but the original by The Verve Pipe. The lyrics are so powerful, whenever I read them I feel the guilt that comes with them.

My take on the song, similar to other people, is that it has to do with a girl who ODed. But I think it's about a man making a confession to himself, and admitting something that his friend and him have hid for a long time. When they were "freshmen," they sexually assaulted a girl who later became pregnant. When she found out, she thought her life was ruined, and overdosed.

This song, is actually done by The Verve Pipe and it isn't about stupid choices you make in high school. "freshman" just means unknowledgible (sp?) as of yet. It's also not about a failing or failed marriage.

It IS about getting an abortion (stopping baby's breath), but they never were married (and a shoe full of rice, no). This is a real song, about a real situation, except his gf did not commit suicide. He felt extremely guilty, that's why he wrote this song.

It's a beautiful song with a great background behind it.

The Verve Pipe.

I agree with your version of the song but for all who love music it it because it has meaning for them and to them. Its all meant to heal the soul and make one and all not feel so alone in this less than perfect world. I mean what about poetry its all interpreted in its own way and only the artist knows what it really means. The real meaning to any poem, song, or art is always left to those who enjoy it, like it was meant in the first place. The artist is healed and so is...

Personally, I think the couple in the first verse never meant to fall in love. Maybe it was meant to be a casual relationship from the beginning, and she, somewhere along, the way fell in love. ex: "...I won't be held responsible ; She fell in love in the first place"

He doesn't understand how he could've ever thought that the decision they made was "wise", and no one would ever get hurt.

In the second verse, His friends deals with a breakup. While his friend tried to forget her and not deal with anything; she couldn't stand the pain and ODed. He realizes how he never truely wept for her, he never truely got over her, just forgot about her for a week.

In the last verse, "We've tried to wash our hands from all of this..." It's clear that they have tried to move on, forgive and forget, so they never talk of the experiences they've encounterd.
