Conqueror Lyrics

All the colours that we saw they touched us
All the trails that they made we followed
We can be just like all of the others
We have to be just like all of the others

All the spaces they made for us are all filled up
And they will deceive us and they will desert us
But all our colours will always be with us
And all our colours they will always be with us

All our colours will always be with us...

with all this stuff about colors and trails it sounds like an acid flashback song, but i think it's about something else. if "colors" is read in the sense of how a person represents himself as a member of a group (as in "show me your colors") and "trails" in the sense of pathways, then the song can be read as a nostalgic homage to the associations of youth. our colors allow is to be like one another, to identify with a group, and our identities are shaped by them such that they remain a part of who we are throughout our lives. they deceive us (into a false sense of idealism), they desert us (we grow older and discover their limitations), but they will always be with us.

You know scooper, this song might actually be about acid after all, I just read an interview with Justin Broadrick and look what he had to say about the album:

"Half of Conqueror is about drugs," Broadrick says. "Some of it is recounting some experiences that I've had one on one with drugs and with nature, through acid and things like that. Some of the best trips I ever had were either very isolated or out in the woods, seeing nature on that level, the ultimate power of nature as opposed to us.

"Not that I'm suggesting that anybody do that."

Well, other than drugs, there is probably a deeper meaning somewhere in there. I've written lyrics about experiences with drugs and well, it wasn't just about some drug or high.

Trails are certainly the pathway of life, and I believe Justin Broadrick went on to speak about not just his own group, but society in general. This machine that is America, that is the modern world. "We have to be just like all the others." "The spaces they made for us are all filled up" could mean that these groups outside of the norm that were pushed off to the side are finally gone, because the pop culture/society in general has expanded to a point where there is no more room for individuality. This goes back to the first section, where he goes on to tell ya to hop on the band wagon. The colours relate to hope, that even in the machine, a human is a human, and an individual is an individual. This song to me is a chant for hope, like chimes after a funeral, or something to that effect.

Beautiful song, incredible soothing drone metal. It's about how no matter where we go and the decisions we make in life, who we are and everything will still always be with and a part of us.
