A lot of this song is from Neil Young's song "My My, Hey Hey". Cloud cult uses two lines from his song. the title and the infamous quote. Kurt Cobain's suicide note, he ended with "better to burn out than fade away" whether this has any thing to do with happy hippo or not. I wanted to put it out there.
BTW my favorite line in this song is:

Its a jumble of similar words but when pulled apart it makes perfect sense. Love cloud cult : )
In the Cloud Cult documentary, Craig says that a lot of the lyrics in this album came from dreams of his in which there was the recurring figure of a hippopotamus, which he would always be chasing or following, and which would always leave new thoughts or insights in his head upon waking. Considered in such a light, this song, which I previously thought was more-or-less nonsense, makes perfect sense, as does the "I'm always wondering why she's wondering why I'm wondering why" line. Awesome song!
