Underwater (You and Me) Lyrics

Some songs see us sailing away
Navigating foreign borders, and climbing the waves
Someday your secret will be revealed
Am I the one you're thinking of when the sun goes down into the water?

We're struck by the still of the moon
Hanging up there in the sky as though a balloon
Anchored by an astronaut's patriot tune
We will buy the ship and fly to the land that would be rediscovered

We'll design a clever disguise
We'll retreat to the bottom of the sea
We were destined to live out our lives underwater, you and me

We'll escape beneath the violet sky
Clouds come and night falls
You seem different on my mind
Upon an endless trail of moonlight
You'll never realize that we have gone, we have gone right out of, out of sight

We'll design a clever disguise
We'll retreat to the bottom of the sea
We were destined to live out our lives underwater, you and me

also, if this song was released a few years back, it would've been quite fitting for the life aquatic with steve zissou.

I think this song is about Aliens, spaceships, the underwater alien colony conspiracy etc.

i thought it was "we'll design a clever disguise" but it doesn't make much of a difference anyway. this might be my favorite song of theirs if no other song on the album, tops it. it seems like a straightforward narrative of lovers running away together leaving behind a trail of mystery in their path (someday your secret will be revealed). basically celebrating romanticism maybe?

Great lyrics, almost a departure from the usual because it's clear and cohesive.

gosh I think the album version of this song is terrible. A few years ago I heard Alec's demo and I just loved it. It's so simple and cute. The rockier version that they're going to put on their new album just.... destroys what I loved about the demo. It's not really a demo, per se, it's just Alec doing a song by himself, I guess. It's all casiotone and simple, I love it. The album version sounds so rushed.

it does kind of sound like adventures in babysitting, so I do love it. the rockier version, that is.

jeatseeds, i felt the same way about 'the big hand' by the cure. i've never heard the demo of 'underwater' but i completely love this album version. i wish the cure would release their original version of 'the big hand' from the end credits of the 'picture show' vhs tape. sigh

I love both versions...one is intimate, the other screams these feelings! Someone could suggest a second meaning? Maybe Heaven?

balumpus - it reminded me of the Waterboys too! Particularly 'we're struck by the still of the moon' reminds me a lot of the chorus of 'Whole of the Moon'.

This song also reminds me a lot of some of Eno's earlier stuff, for some reason... Kind of 'St. Elmo's Fire'. Anyway, it's definitely my favorite track from the album.
