I think this is a song about a man and his mother. His mother is gone, but not dead, emotionally distanced from him and he wishes to see her smile once again. to come back to his childhood when they were together.
At first I thought that this song was about a father, but the title made me think of a woman even if that's the only time "she" is mentioned, the title is very significant.
For me this hauntingly beautiful song is about having a great love and losing it. He fell for a dark/goth woman and still obsesses about her after she broke up with him. He's hurting and hope she hears the song and realizes she should go back to him.
