Joey Had a Smoke Lyrics
They sat thru the night. In an empty apartment. 3 older gentlemen came inside. And they brought wine and cards and chocolate. And Joey smoked on a cigar and came back in. ..So you think he..s something special do you men?..
He stared through hard, cold insolent eyes. Turned his gaze with her. Fear hidden quite secure under blank features. Protruding middle she sat unashamed. She read his judgement on his concerned face. With slight sarcasm He addressed Her case. Is it too much to ask to know about your lover..s name?
He Is no one. He is a stranger I met on the Street. He never touched me. You..re all I need. And Will ever need.
But his eyes won..t be almond like yours nor blue like mine with all the sins of the world in the Iris. There..s no false blood. But you WILL love him. He..s from Gold Gardens. Our help before Atlas was ever born.
He is No one. He is no one.
They sat through the night........

okay.. let me give it a try. this is a christmas song off the Santa Cause 2 compilation.
"They sat thru the night. In an empty apartment. 3 older gentlemen came inside. And they brought wine and cards and chocolate. And Joey smoked on a cigar and came back in. ..So you think he's something special to you men?"
this is referring to the gifts the three men brought joseph and mary when jesus was born. thus "joey had a smoke" is referring to joseph.
lines such as "protruding middle, she sat unashamed" and "is it too much to ask to know about your lover's name?" means the virgin mary is pregnant with jesus and joseph wants to know if she has cheated on him etc..
i think the chorus is describing mary's thoughts on god.. who was the cause of her pregnancy. and how shes convincing joseph that there is no other man in her life.
"but his eyes wont be almond like yours .." is describing how baby jesus wont resemble neither mary nor joseph etc
okay.. that was very long. and it was my first attempt at deciphering a song. hahaha. im done.
"They sat through the night In an empty apartment Three older gentlemen came inside And they brought wine cards and chocolates Joey smoked on a cigar and came back in So you think he's something special do you, men?"
The three older men are the three wise men, and the wine cards and chocolates are the gifts the ybrough Mary and Joseph when Jesus was born. By asking if he's something special, Joseph means that what importance does he have to you?
"He stared through hard, cold insolent eyes Turned his gaze with her Fear hidden quite secure under blank features Protruding middle she sat unashamed She read his judgement on his concerned face With slight sarcasm he addressed her case Is it too much to ask to know about your lover's name?" Joseph doesn't believe that Mary simply got pregnent. But Mary is fully confident in her self.
"He is no one He is a stranger I met on the street He never touched me. You're all I need. And will ever need." Is Mary's plea to joseph. When she says he, she is refering to god. So she is saying he isn't real, simply a spirit but you are the one I love.
"But his eyes won't be almond like yours nor blue like mine With all the sins of the world in the Iris There's no false blood. But you will love him He's from Gold Gardens. Our help before Atlas was ever born."
Though he won't be look like neither one of us, and people will blame me for having him without being married, you will love him. By saying but there's no false blood it means that he is ours, even if you had no part of it. I don't know what gold gardens mean. The line Our help before Atlas was ever born.. Atlas was the god of sin and burden so, our son will carry our burdens and be our joy.
How is it weird? It's not as though they're singing how much they love God or anything; they're just retelling a story. A lot of their songs are about stories. Rebecca is a song told from Rebecca's point of view, a character in a book called (surprise surprise) Rebecca by Daphne duMaurier. Monster is based on something that John Steinbeck mentioned in East of Eden; if a child does not receive love it will become a monster, etc etc blah blah blah. What difference does it make if it's a religious tale? A lot of stories from religious texts are actually quite interesting, I can see why they'd write a song about one...
Sorry, I didn't mean to make that sound so snotty but I had to make a point. Lol.
This song is amazing. i love it. i love the way meg and dia describe the birth of jesus in a individual way. they rock!
well obviously it's the birth of jesus, told in a VERY individual way. kudos to meg and dia! and the line 'he's from GOLD GARDENS' probably means he's a miracle from heaven...
I find this song a little weird though since Dia said in an interview they are athiest.
Wow. This has really opened my eyes! I could never understand what this song meant before, nor could i understand why it was on a christmas cd! thanks!
i agree with keeping november, but there are a few things that dont fit.
"He is no one He is a stranger I met on the street He never touched me. You're all I need. And will ever need." this part talks about how the Virgin Mary and Joseph both encountered an angel, but they were terrified at first. to me, it sounds like joseph is wondering what really happened when they met the angel, or if he even was an angel at all. Joseph was just having his doubts. I dont think it can be referencing to God, cause Mary didnt directly meet God.
"He's from Gold Gardens. Our help before Atlas was ever born." That's talking about how Jesus is from Heaven [Gold Gardens, Eden, Paradise], and He took away our sins and burdens even before Atlas was born.
yayy, this is one of my favorite meg & dia songs.
The "he is no one..." part is about mary carrying jesus and how joesph felt about it. Or who ever was her partner.

Wow, I understand this song now! Meg and Dia are amazing for being able to write lyrics like this holy!!
