Big Julie Lyrics
She's by herself again
in the quiet secret night
Below the neighbour's window
Hands in pockets; head on one side
And the radio plays an unknown song
that has nothing at all to do with God
But it's miles away from this sad town
And the stupid kids who get her down
Just wait until Big Julie rules the world
Big Julie rules the world
Well, the radio still plays:
Floating beyond time
Like the greatest people in the world
All springing up and feeling fine
And it's far away from these sweaty lads
who say that boys cannot be slags
And if it's not them then it's their dads
Like the guy who felt her up in class
And Sunday school teacher who said she had beautiful breasts
And the local radio DJ who is so obviously obsessed
Yeah, form an orderly queue when Big Julie rules the world
Big Julie rules the world
Yeah, go and chase your dreams
But if your dreams are not your own
then wouldn't it be better
just to work things out at home?
And she knows sex is just for dummies anyway
Something you do when you've run out of things to say
But this song will play until the light
It's the sound of her trying to find something to like
The sound of her walking day and night
And this song may lead her far away
But tonight it seems to light the way
And she can almost see the future shine
And everything's in tune and everything's in time
It will play until the day Big Julie rules the world
Big Julie rules the world
in the quiet secret night
Below the neighbour's window
Hands in pockets; head on one side
that has nothing at all to do with God
But it's miles away from this sad town
And the stupid kids who get her down

Great song, and one of my top favorites off the album. I'm impressed by how well Jarvis has gotten into this "character's " head -- as the others said, a lonely girl, but one who has, in my opinion, a very tough inner core and huge determination to get the hell out and find a better life for herself.
I also think Jarvis's insight on sex (always keen) is especially sharp here...he seems to understand the conflict that many girls (and women for that matter) have about sex, especially in their youth, as they're told clearly it's not something they should enjoy or indulge in, while men may take their fill.
Anyhow, it's a fantastic song, and a classic example of Jarvis's unique ability to meld tenderness and intelligence with grime and dissatisfaction.
really powerful song about a girl who is really lonely and men just want to get in her pants rather than actually care about her. Jarvis is great
Gotta be a lonely girl - Jarvis as a passive narrator - who is sick of guys just using her as a sex toy or whatever. But this music gives her hope, and it's like Jarvis willing her to go on because she can make it in the world... Or something? Well, that's what I think.♥
To me this is a very different Jarvis song. Instead of dwelling on the sleazier side of big Julie’s experience he is almost wants to dismiss it (but only just). Big Julie is obviously carried away by a pure form of music. This music quite rightly elevates her to a natural equilibrium. Sometimes in life we are statues and sometimes we are pigeons. I get the f.e.e.l.i.n.g. when Big Julie becomes a pigeon she won’t poo on the statues…. Girls like Julie should rule the world.
Yeah, but on the album here in the states and on Amazon just titled JARVIS (2020 COMPLETE EDITION) this song has an introductory passage of some narrative text being read by what sounds like the author of said text in a southern accent, Eudora Welty sounding, but I don't have the time to look it up. Anybody know who or what this is? Though maybe heard again in the song, IDT the theme is touched on again directly. What slash who the hell is this?
