Please Come Home Lyrics
Well I woke one morning,
found you staring down at me,
you said "I'll take my share now, father please",
and you took your money,
and you took your leave,
you drilled my heart and turned your back on me...
And you hit the town,
and you hit the bottle hard,
you race 'round in your fancy cars and you blow all your money,
on brothels, beds, and bars,
before you know your broken times get hard...
I still stand here waiting,
with my eyes fixed on the road,
and I fight back tears and I wonder,
if you're ever coming home,
don't you know son that I love you,
and I don't care where you've been,
so please come home.
And now you've hit bottom,
all those open doors have shut,
and you're hungry stomach's tied in knots,
but I know what you're thinking,
that you troubled me enough,
nothing could ever separate you from my love...
I still stand here waiting,
with my eyes fixed on the road,
and I fight back tears and I wonder,
if you're ever coming home,
don't you know son that I love you,
and I don't care where you've been,
yes and i'll be right here waiting,
'til you come around the bend,
and I run to you and hold you close,
won't let go again,
so please come home,
please come home...
Don't you know son that I love you?
And I don't care where you've been,
so please come home.

This song actually IS about the story of the prodigal son in the Bible. It's sung in the father's perspective. In that case, it's a beautiful picture of G-d's love for us. ;]
Most beautiful song on the enire album. I am not 100% clear on the meaning but it sounds as if it is about a fathers undying love for his son. Sounds like when the son left he said the cliche things like "I hate you" and all that while walking out the door and now the son hit a rough point in his life and feels too ashamed to come back and face his father and tell him that he failed and his father was right all along.
Lets try and discuss the songs meaning instead og being "the new ambums so amazing" or "dustin is the bestsestesttest" or even the inventible "Thirce is so much better" bullshit. Where for the song, not for how cool or uncool you think this shit is. I'm sure there is a message board somewhere else for that. Thanks.
I think that this song is related to the story from the Bible about the prodical son. the boy leaves home, asks his father for his share of the wealth. He spends it on party's and a wild life and runs into great trouble, ends up eating pig food, etc. So he tries to go home and apologize to his family. His father is happy to see him and is not mad about him leaving or spending all his money, he is just happy that he has come home. Beautiful song.
It's the prodigal son thing. Most of the album has underlying (or blatant) religious meaning. Dustin sure can write.
Yeah this song is an allusion to the prodigal son parable from the gospels. amazing story and song, it is about how God will let us stray away but he always wants us to come back to him and welcomes us back afterwards. He always will love us and invite us back into His kingdom.

When he was touring last fall, this song was called "Prodigal Son." The song very closely resembles the story in the Bible (Luke 15:11-32). Dustin added little things like "fancy cars" to modernize it slightly, but still same great story.
and an amazing song.
this song is the like the story of my life. The music is very good very countin crows/ 90s alt.
i think what makes it so amazing is that it's told from the point of view of the father. although this parable has inspired many songs (even a handful from the point of view of the father), it's still very moving because it's such a relatable story.
Wasn't this song originally called Prodigical before the album was released?
