Survived By Her Mother Lyrics

after class you would drag me with protest
to the empty cherry tree
to tend the ground there
once a week respectfully

you would speak to me
of the carrot-headed sister
just beneath my feet as solemnly
you would stroke the ground
to tuck her into her
silten sheets some six feet deep

with the months that passed before you
could afford to mark the ground beneath the cherry tree
I learned to wait in your sheepskin seats
and dig my teeth deep into my knees
to dam the creeks above these ruddy cheeks that betray me

now you signed your name across the space beside her
and tend the ground where you will lay apart from everything
but your carrot-headed daughter beneath that cherry tree
eternally

The story of the song is fairly obvious, about a young boy who was taken every day to pay his respects to his sister who had died (probably before he was born). He wanted his mother to pay more attention to him, she's have to "drag [him] with protest" to help her tend the tree. The mother disconnected herself form her living family, "lay[ing] apart from everything but [her] carrot-headed daughter."

Maybe its just me, but i think that this song is about an incestous relationship. It has that kind of dark, warped, but pretty feel to it. And i think it changes from Sister to Daughter for a reason. Like obviously, the first and second verses are about a guy dragging a girl to show him his sisters gravesite. The third verse is that guy and a girl getting into the relationship. And the last verse and the outro to the song sound to me like she finds out that its his Sister AND his daughter, and is shocked, while he's out tending to the gravesite per usual. It just feels like a very pretty song warped in some way, and i think its like her finding out the one thing she met him through and admired about him was warped too.
