Coastguard Lyrics
Coastguard are you familiar
High tides are not peculiar
And on the table is a yellow coat
And on the table is a yellow coat
Mummy tries
Bye bye
Mummy tries
Bye bye
Think back what were you doing then
Back turned and turned back again
And on the table is your sorry face
On the table is your sorry face
Mummy tries
Bye bye
Mummy tries
Bye bye
Deep black and deep
She takes the most
Black deep and black
She takes the most
Deep black and deep
She takes the most
Black deep and black
She takes the most
Sit down it’s what you always do
Talk loud who are you talking to
And at the table is an empty place
at the table is an empty place
Mummy tries
Bye bye
Mummy tries
Mummy tries
These are the pearls that were her eyes
She’s flotsam carried on the tides
Is she lost or did she hide?
On shifting rocks
On shifting rocks
She couldn’t swim she couldn’t see
The current pushing out the sea
Down estuaries and tributaries
On benthic rocks
She’s wrecked on Benthic rocks
She’s been swept away (x4)
High tides are not peculiar
And on the table is a yellow coat
And on the table is a yellow coat
Bye bye
Mummy tries
Bye bye
Back turned and turned back again
And on the table is your sorry face
On the table is your sorry face
Bye bye
Mummy tries
Bye bye
She takes the most
Black deep and black
She takes the most
Deep black and deep
She takes the most
Black deep and black
She takes the most
Talk loud who are you talking to
And at the table is an empty place
at the table is an empty place
Bye bye
Mummy tries
Mummy tries
She’s flotsam carried on the tides
Is she lost or did she hide?
On shifting rocks

I think this song is about a family where the father is always gone so the mom has to make up for it and tries really hard to do well for her family, but can't take the pressure and pain and decides to kill herself. I think the son is still sort of confused on whether she did it on purpose or it was an accident. I love this song because it has a really sad message but it's up tempo and cathcy, like the singer is trying to hide his true feelings.
If you can, try to listen to the 'Nolens Volens' Demo version of this.
I think its about what sataygre says.
But I'd like too add something.
He says 'Coastguard are you familiar' is this perhaps a question? Like asking himself, 'I know that face'
I also think its about domestic violence and such too. Some of the lyrics have that sort of undertone!
