With your eyes closed watching a strange show play out in your head,
But you were smiling somehow.
And your day froze and everyone in it sat still as a rose,
But we were moving somehow.
Back to when we started, losing who we were.
Maybe we should only tip a bottle back to keep us filled up
Back to when we started, losing who we were.
Everybody knows that you'd break your neck to keep your chin up
Open your eyes and the drops come in a snail race down to your neck.
And look up but you were smiling somehow
Back to when we started, losing who we were.
Maybe we should only tip a bottle back to keep us filled up
Back to when we started losing who we were
Everybody knows that you'd break your neck to keep your chin up
You'd break your neck to keep your chin up.
You'd break your neck to keep your chin up.
(Back to when we started, losing who we were.)
You'd break your neck to keep your chin up.
(Everybody knows that you'd break your neck to keep your chin up.)
You'd break your neck to keep your chin up.
You'd break your neck to keep your chin up.
You'd break your neck to keep your chin up.
Back to when we started, losing who we were.
Maybe we should only tip a bottle back to keep us filled up
Back to when we stated, losing who we were
(You'd break your neck to keep your chin up)

From an interview with aaron:
"Chin up" was inspired by a friend who would go to great lengths to put up a front of being happy with the way her life had turned out. In my head, it's the saddest song I've ever written.
Beautiful and sad meaning all together. It brings tears to my eyes. Yeah, Copeland does that for me.

I could say this is all about a deeper man-woman relationship that is never meant to happen eversince they became friends. They practically know that it ought not to happen because it's just inappropriate for the time being but started to feel mutually connected to each other. The lines "back to where we started, losing who we are" states their effort to hold it back for the sake of each other's pride. "Tip a bottle back to keep us filled up" could mean drinking it out as a grave suggestion to forget what they feel. And breaking one's neck to keep the chin up literally means doin everything to still stand straight despite the painful feeling of losing someone who's dear to you...
To me the song is about how its okey sometimes to let your head fall down (be sad that is) and let all your emotions come out. "Break your neck to keep your chin up" shows to me how its hurtful for you to hold everything in you and keeping that pride up. Ultimately you hit a wall where you no longer can keep your chin up...love the song, cause I feel that its okey to be sad sometimes :)
ahh where can i get this track? on the internet preferably. helpp please.
Ah, i love copeland.
to me, this song reminds me of returning home after a year of college. although we still have a friendship, all my highschool friends have their own lives now and it's not the same.
what an amazing song.
This is brilliant. I think jeffyzai is on track here, but I don't think it's just about college - there's multiple meanings here. I think when Aaron penned this, it may about being on tour. How they come home after it all and everything has moved on and changed without them there, and how different it feels.
It really is about keeping your 'image', about how you come across to people even if it means sometimes compromising who you are as a person - all just to fit in.
i think "you'd break your neck to keep your chin up" is more of them saying that things don't always play out as we'd like, some of us will do everything we can just to keep our chin up.
this song is about change definitely, he doesn't want anything to change, but he's watching it happen and can't do anything about it, except try and make the best of it, which is where "you'd break your neck to keep your chin up" comes in, he'll do anything to keep his head up, and be optimistic about it
this song is fucking beautiful. i think its rather self-explanatory too, but...keep you're fucking chin up no matter how bad it hurts, break your neck to keep face.
