Hoquiam Lyrics
Standing with my feet deep in the ground
Was I nothing but a landslide in your mind?
Am I no one until someone calls me out?
Are you just pretending when we talk?
You should have seen me
Keeping watch at dawn
Picture now a car ride through the plains
Where east meets west and only sky remain
Were you faking death to only gain concern?
The cut out lights and signals told us wrong
You should have seen us
Carefree behind the wheel
Lover I am still here breaking chairs
Will I ever be the hero in your song
Or forever in your shadow so unseen?
Trapped between the lines that you write down?
You should have told me
Broken jaw and all
Crippled in your glory
Restless till my death
Was I nothing but a landslide in your mind?
Am I no one until someone calls me out?
Are you just pretending when we talk?
Keeping watch at dawn
Where east meets west and only sky remain
Were you faking death to only gain concern?
The cut out lights and signals told us wrong
Carefree behind the wheel
Will I ever be the hero in your song
Or forever in your shadow so unseen?
Trapped between the lines that you write down?
Broken jaw and all
Crippled in your glory
Restless till my death

I don't know the perfect interpretation, but here's my impressions on it.
The whole thing seems to be him putting out his positions on things and then asking if the person he loves feels the same way.
Standing with my feet deep in the ground -----the relationship is over, and he's in a landslide... he feels overwhelmed by the other person, like he just got carried away Was I nothing but a landslide in your mind? ----is she feeling that too? is that all it was for her--getting carried away? Am I no one until someone calls me out? -------do i need to be in another relationship to feel complete? Are you just pretending when we talk?
You should have seen me -------he remembers being awake one morning while she was apparently still asleep Keeping watch at dawn
Picture now a car ride through the plains Where east meets west and only sky remain ------pretty memory of a road trip which maybe ended in car wreck Were you faking death to only gain concern? -----back to the keeping watch at dawn... is she just pretending to be asleep so that he will pay attention to her? was she pretending on more things than that just to have his affections? The cut out lights and signals told us wrong ------someone ran a traffic light/maybe the headlights were off for one of the cars... there was a wreck. symbolic of the end of the relationship
You should have seen us Carefree behind the wheel ------the wreck was result of the carefree stuff. but he still loves that memory
Lover I am still here breaking chairs ------probably another memory that only she and he would know what it refers to Will I ever be the hero in your song ------he is writing a song about her... does she write songs about him? Or forever in your shadow so unseen? Trapped between the lines that you write down?
You should have told me Broken jaw and all ------goes back the car wreck/ending relationship and ties into "Are you just pretending when we talk?" Crippled in your glory ------her best attribute is the way she talks, and that is messed up now. she doesn't talk to him like she did before. Restless till my death ------he can't forget all these memories/ he keeps wondering where she stands on all this
i guess the system didn't like my angle bracket for arrows before.
I appreciate your analysis, but I don't think he's so much wondering as trying to accept the fact that this person in fact is not where he is at. He has been solidly in the relationship from the beginning, and although he's using questions, they seem more rhetorical, bordering on almost a very sad, lonely kind of sarcasm, rather than questions that he is actually looking for answers to. He's not wondering IF she doesn't return his sentiments, but WHY she doesn't.

It sounds like she's a drama queen (You'd fake your own death to get concern, only pays attention...
It sounds like she's a drama queen (You'd fake your own death to get concern, only pays attention to him when someone calls him out for a fault and she has to dramatically defend him, etc.), and even though he knows that she is just in it for the show, his feelings are real.
I do not think the car ride is supposed to be taken literally, but as a metaphor, however you choose to interpret that. (Think of the scenery, the isolation, the freedom from scrutinizing eyes of society.) The best cue that let's you know that this is not a literal event is when he tells his lover, "You should have seen us."
I think this must be a rather classic tale of when you find out that the other person was never completely invested in a relationship that you thought was real and was important to you. If anyone disagrees or has insight into many of the nuances that occur throughout the song, I'd love to hear what other people get out of it, because I think this is one of those interesting songs that you could probably listen to a hundred times and still find something new in it each time.
I would like to see someone say what they think this amazing song means
