Carpetbaggers Lyrics
They come to town when the war is over
Dirty boots in the middle of the night
Trolling the bars, hitting on the soldiers
Boys give it up without a fight
They say, "Hey, boy, how about your place?
I know you really want to take me home"
Drop the bags off on the bedroom floor
They make love with the lights on, saying
"I'm a carpetbagger, baby
I'm coming to your town
I'm going to treat you kind (woo-hoo)
I'm going to rob you blind (woo-hoo)
I'll smile all the time
Whoa, yeah
Whoa, yeah
Whoa, yeah"
Sally could have had any one of the boys
But she couldn't love no one she could not control
Friend of mine and her got married
I don't hear too much from them anymore
Last I heard, he had a rope around his neck
Dragging around the grocery store
Carrying her bags and pushing down the aisles
Saying, "I ain't got no home in this world anymore"
"I'm a carpetbagger, baby
I'm coming to your town
I'm going to treat you kind (woo-hoo)
I'm going to rob you blind (woo-hoo)
I'll smile all the time
Whoa, yeah
Whoa, yeah
Whoa, yeah"
They come to town when the party's over
Books been written and truths been tried
They'll take it all if the door's left open
Steal the nose right from under your eyes
Singing, "I'm a carpetbagger, baby
I'm coming to your town
I'm going to treat you kind (woo-hoo)
I'm going to rob you blind (woo-hoo)
I'll smile all the time
Whoa, yeah

historically, carpetbagger is a derrogatory term for an exploiter who does not remain in one place.
that sounds about right for what the songs about.
"the reason why america can't keep their doors unlocked at night"
A carpetbagger is also a person who is in a place where he or she doesn't belong, I think the song is more related to that.
Historically, in the United States, the term "carpetbagger" came from the period after the Civil War (Reconstruction era). It was a derogatory term for white Northerners who moved South and took advantage of the devastation to gain political power. The term is now used for anyone who moves to a devastated area to take advantage of the situation.
NOPE :-) WRONG :-(
Just not that deep

Carpetbagger:
In United States history, carpetbagger was a pejorative term Southerners gave to Northerners (also referred to as Yankees) who moved to the South during the Reconstruction era, between 1865 and 1877.
The term referred to the observation that these newcomers tended to carry "carpet bags," a common form of luggage at the time (sturdy and made from used carpet). It was used as a derogatory term, suggesting opportunism and exploitation by the outsiders.
I think the song is sort of referring to a friend who a girl comes from outside the circle of friends, charms a guy he knows and then he winds up being "p*ssy whipped" as it is often referred to, and he loses contact with his old life and his pals because he's been dominated.
