I think he's saying that even when he's gone and dead.. he hopes that he made a difference in her life... and that she would have the strength to carry on without him..and that she would never forget... and hes afraid shes going to leave and wreck his world. Well thats the impression I get.
I guess you are implying that this is the song about love, but IMO it can mean something else - brothers in arms, for example. Some lyrics may sound strange, intimate in a weird way, but it is not unheard of in some cultures and time periods for soldiers to be close to each other without any romantic or sexual undertones; taking your comrade's dying kiss and so on.

I like this song so much...it is so deep and saddening...it means much to me... This Is My Battlefield is a great album... :)
