Bad Cops Bad Charities Lyrics
I saw a sign by a payphone
It said get in line so I did
The nice cars they drive by fast
Sucking up many gallons of gas
I wish I had a fuel
I wish I had a fuel
In the alley with a box for two
Flashbacks to my old room
Im sorry about the mess
Im sorry about the mess
I think we have a better chance
Rob the place but dont leave a mess
Rob the place but dont leave a mess
The big stars that crash cars and get paid
To say lines and pay fines and get laid
I dont have to look to see
That that place isnt me
The guitars and money the big shots
Bad cops and charities go bye
In the alley with a box for two
In the alley with a box for two
It said get in line so I did
Sucking up many gallons of gas
I wish I had a fuel
Flashbacks to my old room
Im sorry about the mess
Rob the place but dont leave a mess
Rob the place but dont leave a mess
To say lines and pay fines and get laid
I dont have to look to see
That that place isnt me
The guitars and money the big shots
Bad cops and charities go bye
In the alley with a box for two

does anyone know what the conversation that plays at the end of the track and goes on throughout the song says? All i can get is a girl saying "Umm, i mean that and also .... weirdness ... friendship ..." then a man laughs, and she says something else again...
sorry i know i'm a n00b but its always bothered me, i made an account here just to see if anyone else heard it :)
it's not "in the alley wit ha box for two" it's "in the alley with a prostitue" hence the line "to say lines and pay fines and get laid"
and it's not "rob the place but don't leave a mess," it's "rob the place but clean up the mess."
hooo i love this song.
uhm, I'm pretty sure its "a box for two". Listen close enough.
Thiiiiiis song is awesome. :]]
yeah, it's most definitely 'a box for two'. i'm listening to it right now, and i dunno where you got 'prostitute' from. :]
it SOUNDS like "prostitute" before i read the lyrics, i was certain it was prostitute. but it's "box for two."
this song's about dan not wanting to buy into the typical "celebrity" thing. flashy cars, hot groupies, everything that defines today's typical "rockstar"
hence the chorus
I always thought it said "prostitute" I'm glad I'm not the only one. :]
and I belive it says "ohh diamonds" or something similar in the background right after the "rob the place but clean up the mess"
Haha yeah, I first thought he was singing "prostitute" too, but then it didn't feel definitive; it felt like I might have gotten it wrong so I came here to check and hey! People have found something that matches what you hear in the song better.
Then because of that, I became not exactly sure what it means for the song that he meant to sing "box for two." And I never was sure what the other lines he sings that are probably related, meant too. "In the alley with a box for two," the old room he remembers, the robbed places, the mess he's sorry about; instead, what had hooked me to this song in the first place was the rest of the song--the stars, the cars, luxury and extravagance, but that they weren't him.
But now, I have an interpretation of the song that has changed the way I view the rant-like chorus, though. The best thing I can come up with is that the person Dan is singing about is newly homeless, but is optimistic about it and feels like it will be okay anyway, and currently is standing in line for some kind of charity food or supplies distribution effort, so he has lots of time to look around himself and watch things and think. However, he's also dragged someone else, a girl he's close to, into homelessness with him, and is feeling a little crappy about that, and she isn't as confident about everything as he is so he tries to raise her confidence in the situation a little. And then, because he's watching things right now with all the time he has, all the things in the rant-like chorus he says about the nice cars that are going by and the bigshots with guitars and money who crash said cars and do nothing but say lines and get laid, are instead just the things nearby this man that he's seeing right now. And they make him feel depressed and inadequate because they're so nearby him, becase he has to look at them and be reminded of their easier lives and nice things when he himself doesn't have either at present, and all while he's waiting in a line for something that marks him visibly as poor and reinforces that he doesn't have too much right now. He's not that bothered by them--as I said, he seems pretty alright with his situation and status, but at the same time, he's sort of like, "Sigh. That would be nice wouldn't it?" like their presence is kind of this unneccesary sting that makes him dreamy and wishful again, despite himself. I don't find that section to be very rant-like, the tone of voice in that section feels softer, and not like his highest purpose there was to denounce "the celebrity way." I think he's more trying to evoke feelings of the general unfairness of the situation.
More later. =p
wow i agree with deadkazin. that was a beautiful interpretation and truly deep. good insight.
