Mountains Lyrics

once i was a big old bear
reigning blows on sparkly snares
in the woods after the snow
the white noise witch her hammers cold
rest beneath the pine and rose
in our suits and sunday clothes

cheer up my brother
it’s going to be alright
i know your hearts are heavy as mountains
but were going to go back home one day

hang there little winter star
tell me who you really are
up above the world so high
like a diamond in the sky
born with honey in my hair
once i was a big old bear

cheer up my brother
it’s going to be alright
i know your hearts are heavy as mountains
but were going to go back home one day

wore my dress up to my knees
there’s ghosts of babies in the streams

The entire album is about trying to cope with his soulmate's death. Every song is about her or how he feels now that she's gone.

It's completely depressing, but he lost a BIG part of his life, and he felt as though he had nothing left. It's a tragedy.

I've probably got this entirely wrong - but you know, thought i'd give it a go. If what I've got is right, it's a very nice fairytale type thing about optimism and being a bear. erm...

I think this song is optimistic, but a little sad at the same time. I think its about someone who has reached a new place in their life and just arent really sure who they are anymore, like they've lost sight of themself. And the song is saying that it's ok to be confused but just keep going and you will come to find yourself. Maybe the person lost someone close to them (break up, or whatever the case may be) and he has a heavy heart and now doesnt know who he is without this person. I dunno, just an idea.

i, kind of, think it's about having become an adult and not properly living life anymore, now that childhood has passed. and the idea of going 'back home one day' might be to do with death and an after life - in which the character truely feels will be the only time in which he'll live again.

I wish I could try to put out a new interpretation.. But I just don't know.. But I DO know that this is a great song. Certainly one of my favorite from Sparklehorse..

I do agree that this song seems to be sad and happy in ways at the same time. Hard to explain why, though.. The way "we're gonna go back home one day" seems to be incredibly sad and happy at the same time =S

hang in there, winter star i know your heart's heavy as mountains

I love the hiss and crackle of this song, and the abrupt cessations of the acoustic guitar that leads to the sharp slide of the electric. I listened to this while i was sitting next to you, pretending to work on my assignment.
