The Convenience Of Being Absent

To me this is a song that the singer sings to someone very close to them who suffers from some mental illness / severe depression and have snapped in some way, quite possibly attempted to commit suicide without having shown any signs, no prior warning whatsoever.

• I hadn't ever so much as caught a glimpse of the storm in your head, got me entirely by surprise

"What is your substance? What are you made of?"

• Who the hell really are you? It's like an entirely new person.

"And all your grimaces like curtains on the wall To guard against our eyes to nullify it all Your deepest wish directing dramas in your head 'Leave your person and be someone else instead'"

• You had concealed your true, tormented self under a cover of everlasting cheerfulness, while all that darkness twisted and twitched on the inside, never really showing.

"Have I not deserved to grasp we're perfect and complete? Have I built these walls around us, forever you me? Forever you and me Forever you and me"

• This leads me to believe its someone particularly close, likely a significant other (Have I built these walls around us, forever you and me?). The singer complains that he should have earned their trust and is particularly devastated at how they never really openned to them (Have I not deserved to grasp we're perfect and complete?)

"And all intelligence has to be left behind To spend an evening without you on my mind While you are better off with any of these pills We keep on juggling animosities and thrills"

• No matter what I do, I'm relentlessly haunted by thoughts of what you did if I'm not suppressing every hint of thought in my head (first 2 verses).
• You just skate by (probably) through medication, antidepressants and such, while I have to keep going (juggling animosities and thrills essentially IS living).

"We thought you are funny"

• You were pretty odd, but nothing pointed towards that particular oddity.

"What is your substence? What are you made of? What is normal? Am I normal?"

• The blow was such that my inner compass is shaky.

• I need you. What in the FUCK am I supposed to do if you weren't there anymore? Try and overcome whatever it is you're going through, if nothing else, for MY sake.
