The Lighthousekeeper Lyrics
You need a little light in your life,
a safety net so you're not so blind.
Like hidden torches in the paper rounds of old,
And magazines so gently thumbed by landing lights.
When you were young as the radio would talk you off to sleep.
Although the arcades shine bright, they don't have the glow of the city lights
as they long to guide you home from time to time.
Neon lights and screaching times
swarm like moths to pier fires on the stretch about a mile from home.
It seems a millon miles away as we were are walking in the gaze
of the green eyed monster on the banks of waterloo
Although the arcades shine bright, they don't have the glow of the city lights
and they long to guide you home, you've got to
get out of this place, get out of this place,
get out of this place, while your still alive Sam
Take some time then soon repress the thoughts of walks in dungeness
and the lighthouse keeper as he keeps the boats at bay,
remembering this little light that shines in westcliff park Drive,
a suburban lighthouse when you need to feel safe.
The city tonight does not feel as warm as those winter fires
and its good to be home from time to time.
a safety net so you're not so blind.

This song basically tells of how Sam feels about his home town of Southend on Sea. Im some respects he wants to leave as it doesnt have the same draw as the big cities being just a small coastal town. However, as the old saying goes, "there's no place like home" so when he's out of town on tour etc he misses home and all the things that he has grown to love! Westcliff Park Drive is a road in the town, i'm guessing where he grew up, and it is refered to as being a suburban lighthouse, symbolising that it is a beacon that shines out reminding us that we will always feel safe at home
love it :) its a beautiful song not sure what its about though lol
get.cape.rule spot on - couldn't have put it better myself :)
the whole lighthouse thing refers to the lighthouse at dungeness me thinks where im guessing he visited a few times. and this light makes him feels safe as does the light in his home hence 'suburban lighthouse'. i THINK.
i love it :) the simple tune which some other songs have but are then either ruined by ugly lyrics or strange vocals which dont fit. but this is perfect

get.cape.rule is right. sam said it was about a time he played a gig in his home town. when walking home along the seafront after the gig he saw that someone had set the pier on fire. again. he told the story better than that and it was actually quite funny. was awesome live last week with the three man brass section.
