Royal In The Afternoon Lyrics
I won't drink, I won't smoke
Won't get home at a hundred o'clock
Nobody's goin' to satisfy me
Except you and the baby and the colour TV
I was always in my prime
Now I'm falling over the line
The boys are sad to have to let me go
But you got it all to get me home
'Cause you quiet me down
I been all over the place and I ain't found anyone
Can keep my feet on the ground, no
We can be bigger than my old habits
Over my dead body but still
If I am awake in the morning
We'll be royal in the afternoon
The words of a drunk fade with the light
Satan delivers and the goods are alright
He's at home now counting the dough
I'm standing here for another last throw
'Cause you quiet me down
I been all over the place and I ain't found anyone
Can keep my feet on the ground, no
We can be bigger than my bad habits
Over my dead body but still
If I am awake in the morning
We'll be royal in the afternoon
We can be bigger than my old habits
Over my dead body but still
And if I am awake in the morning
We'll be royal in the afternoon
We can be bigger than my bad habits
Over my dead body but still
And if I am awake in the morning
We'll be royal in the afternoon
Royal in the afternoon
Won't get home at a hundred o'clock
Nobody's goin' to satisfy me
Except you and the baby and the colour TV
Now I'm falling over the line

This seems to be, no doubt, about Tim's new-found fatherhood. Rather than sappy and corny, he takes it from his trademark angle of charming sarcasm. Excellent song. Anyone know what the actual title line ("Royal in the Afternoon") may mean though?
well.. I have an idea. Before he sings royal in the afternoon, he says, "If I am awake in the morning".. which says to me his saying, If I am not hung over, we will have a good time. (A good time, meaning royal..)
Probably wrong though.
Rad song. I feel so Australian right now.
I think the song is a reference to the Royal Hotel in Newtown, Sydney.
This song is so Australian. Not giving a shit, but being excited at the same time.
this song is basically saying that he is a wild kind of guy, likes to sleep in, used to go out and drink and smoke a lot. but his new girl and baby have superceeded this as they are more important to him. it actually says 'can't be bigger than my old habits' ; he's saying home life isnt as spectacular as his previous life, but he likes it how it is, and if he's awake in the morning (cause he is a lazy guy) then in the arvo he will treat his girl like a queen
"over my dead body but still" hints at that even though he is quite happy with his new-found fatherhood, and everything, he still misses his old life and perhaps they cannot be bigger than that after all. a poignant reminder to the reality of the fragility of love.
