Under The Northern Star Lyrics
The icy winter is getting near
Dark skies above us
Biting frost is in the air
Darkness surrounds us
The cold piercing autumn breeze
Fills the longships sail
Soon the lakes and seas will freeze
And snow will lay its veil
Many years we have been away
Many oceans we have roam(ed)
Now the North star guides us on our way
As we are heading home
The many hardships we've endured that brought us rich rewards
Now the North star guides us home
With cargo full of gold
Many friends died on the way
Only few of us survived
But I would gladly trade them place
In Odens hall up high
The icy winter is getting near
Dark skies above us
Biting frost is in the air
Darkness surrounds us
Soon the lakes and seas will freeze
And snow will lay its trail
And we will hope for the summer breeze
When we can set our sails
Dark skies above us
Biting frost is in the air
Darkness surrounds us
Fills the longships sail
Soon the lakes and seas will freeze
And snow will lay its veil
Many oceans we have roam(ed)
Now the North star guides us on our way
As we are heading home
Now the North star guides us home
With cargo full of gold
Only few of us survived
But I would gladly trade them place
In Odens hall up high
Dark skies above us
Biting frost is in the air
Darkness surrounds us
And snow will lay its trail
And we will hope for the summer breeze
When we can set our sails

One of Amon Amarth's more emotional songs. Its about brotherhood and thinking about the past, but moving on towards a new day.
"Many friends died on the way Only few of us survived But I would gladly trade them place In Odens hall up high"
This passage is very powerful to me. Friends are never lost, just remembered forever. When you are in troubled times, follow the North Star. It will lead you on.
Hmm, don't know how you got that.
I thought it showed how he would have rather died than them die, mainly because they are in Valhalla and presumably he is going to Niflheim and join Hel's army to fight against his friends at Ragnarök.
Also considering the season being reminiscent of both the end of his life (of age i.e. going to Hel) and possibly the start of Ragnarök which was preceded by, I think , 3 years of winter, that event may not be far off.

I just see it like the author is saying that some of his friends are dead, but he would have gladly died if it brought them back.

I see this as the warriors are done doing whatever it was their adventure was be it wars or pilaging or whatever. They are on the way home and reliving the memories in their minds. Seeing as it is an honor to die in battle i think he is saying he's saying he'd much rather have died in battle, much like what cpt. said.
