An Oak Tree Lyrics

Take a look at the oak trees
In the park standing tall
like a tower of resilience
despite the leaves that fall.
Stripping them back to their
fraught frames, all naked
and on display. Like us they
dress for the season. It will soon be spring again. But you and I were not designed
to be evergreens i guess
that it's time to long for
april to come. Am i willing
to wait here again? Although
I'm hungry and I'm tired and
all the bridges I made on the
way are quickly turning into
fires and as the embers are
growing and no phoenix emerge
I guess another set back is
another lesson learnt.
Let's strip it back to the bare bones,
though not a matter of choice,
there's still something of worth
in just an acoustic and a voice.
As the new shoots start growing
at the start of the year,
the tree is ready to deliver
despite inital years

i reckon this song is about a failed relationship. "were not designed to be evergreens" is him saying they weren't gonna last forever. he questions "am i willing to wait here again? although im hungry and im tired." for me when you break up with someone, you don't sleep and you don't eat so he's asking is he gonna hang on to the fact that they may get back together and feel crappy holding on to what may be a lost cause, or move on. "another set back is another lesson learnt" is saying that at least they can learn from their mistakes. "there's still somthing of worth" means he realises that he is willing to hang on and then "the tree is willing to deliver despite initial years" could mean they get back together. although its hard and sometimes easier to let go, some things are worth holding on to. thats just how ive read it anyway.

isn't it 'despite initial fear ?' anyhow i don't agree with above i think it's like all of sam's songs, more about the self and discovering who you are - than about a relationship. its about showing resilience, perhaps sam showing resilience in his music which is knocked for being 'an acoustic and a voice.' its saying despite being knocked back the tree is back next year stronger. personification of his battle and his music.
