Runes to My Memory Lyrics
We rode the rivers of the eastern trail
Deep in the land of the Rus
Following the wind in our sails
And the rhythm of the oars
No shelter in this hostile land
Constantly on guard
Ready to fight and defend, our ship to bitter end
We came under attack
I received a deadly wound
A spear was forced into my back
Still I fought on
When I am dead, lay me in a mound
Raise a stone for all to see
Runes carved to my memory!
Here I lie on the river bank
A long long way from home
Life is pouring out of me
Soon I will be gone
I tilt my head, to the side
And think of those back home
I see the river rushing by
The blood runs from my wound
Here I lie, on wet sand
I will not make it home
I clench my sword in my hand
Say farewell to those I love
When I am dead, lay me in a mound
Place my weapons by my side
For the journey to hall up high
When I am dead, lay me in a mound
Raise a stone for all to see
Runes carved to my memory!
To my memory
Deep in the land of the Rus
Following the wind in our sails
And the rhythm of the oars
No shelter in this hostile land
Constantly on guard
Ready to fight and defend, our ship to bitter end
I received a deadly wound
A spear was forced into my back
Still I fought on
Raise a stone for all to see
Runes carved to my memory!
A long long way from home
Life is pouring out of me
Soon I will be gone
I tilt my head, to the side
And think of those back home
I see the river rushing by
The blood runs from my wound
I will not make it home
I clench my sword in my hand
Say farewell to those I love
Place my weapons by my side
For the journey to hall up high
Raise a stone for all to see
Runes carved to my memory!
To my memory

This song from what I can tell is about wishes of a fallen warrior (obviously viking). He wants people to remember him so he's saying to carve a rune for all to see thats dedicated to him.
I'll admit this song gets off the a slow start but the riffs are amazing during the chorus
that and possibly like a totem to scare off enemies. letting them know that someone who wasnt gonna take any shit died here

i agree with zion's interpretation of the song. you are so right the chorus of this song is amazing..it's the whole reason i like it
Excellent song, captures the feeling of being a plundering viking who knows he will never return to his home and loved ones, but chooses to die an honourable death beside his brothers-in-arms.
yep what zion said!
great song from a great album!
The Rus are a group of Norsemen who settled in what is now Russia. They were greatly feared and respected, so the people of Kiev hired them to guard the city from other invaders.
ZION said it best
Yep, zion said it all. Great song, great band.
The entire CD is great.
It is in reference to runestones. Large rocks placed either to honor someone of great importance, or a significant event. They would have Futhark runes carved into them, if for a notable individual like a Jarl or King. These would be markers, not unlike headstones.
