I Feel Like Going Home

i can't believe no one has commented. this is my faverite yo la tengo song. it is beutiful every time i hear it i see a short film i want to make playing to the music. it is about having somthing beautiful and simple. i really want to hear others opinons please share!

"to go off on my own" instead of "to grow up on my own"

this song is beautiful. while i am at a college 4 hours from the house i lived in for the first 18 years of my life, my close friend and i trade emails with songs that have captured our heart for that particular moment. he has sent me multiple Yo La Tengo songs, and i've really grown to love them. i was skimming the lyrics page and found this song. initially, the lyrics moved me. i did a google search and listened to the song on rhapsody. i was not expecting the beauty of the music to match so well with the lyrics. i'm not sure why i was so taken aback by Yo La Tengo's ability to do this.

despite the fact that i'm home right now, i want to go home. this song makes me want to become a child again before i knew what it was like to not be home... before i knew that i could truly ever call another place home... before i knew the confusing feeling of home no longer feeling as safe and secure as it did a year ago.

i think it's about going 'home' to someone the singer loved. and that the voices and their thoughts of what could of been; "Now I wish they'd leave me alone And let me be To grow up on my own" the stuff about floating in the air and imagination is probably about how they are usually carefree and happy but lately they are sad and uninterested in anything other then being with their lover. it's a beautiful song.

Funnily enough, I've chosen this song to walk down the aisle too! I mainly chose it because as well as it being a beautiful song, I was inspired by the line "he calls me to the ocean" as I'm getting married in a hotel on the beach, with my hubby waiting ocean side to meet me. I'm not too keen on this suicide theory for obvious reasons!

This has got to be my favorite track off of their new album and pretty close to my favorite one altogether.

And this is my interpretation, roughly but I feel like it's a song about running away from where you are. Running away because you feel like it's not in any way connected to what you really want, it's as if you're lost and you don't know who you are.

"I can float above the ceiling / I like drifting through the air / I tend to lose my concentration"

So by continuously saying that you "feel like going home" you want to leave that shithole for something more. Some place where you feel like you really belong. That.. Is home.

To me, this song is about someone who has thoughts of suicide, but isn't ready to die yet. "He" in the first line is referring to God.

I'm inclined to agree with JeffV regarding a possibly suicidal element. Specifically, the first line reminds me of the haunted Quentin Compson in Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury, who saw "grottoes of the sea" before deciding to commit suicide.
