Q&A
By The Mark Lyrics
When I cross over
I will shout and sing
I will know my savior
By the mark
Where the nails have been
By the mark
Where the nails have been
By the sign
Upon his precious skin
I will know my savior
When I come to him
By the mark
Where the nails have been
A man of riches
May claim a crown of jewels
But the king of heaven
Can be told from
The prince of fools
By the mark
Where the nails have been
By the sign
Upon his precious skin
I will know my savior
When I come to him
By the mark
Where the nails have been
On Cavalry Mountain
Where they made him suffer so
All my sin was paid for
A long, long time ago
By the mark
Where the nails have been
By the sign
Upon his precious skin
I will know my savior
When I come to him
By the mark
Where the nails have been
I will know my savior
When I come to him
By the mark
Where the nails have been
I will shout and sing
I will know my savior
By the mark
Where the nails have been
Where the nails have been
By the sign
Upon his precious skin
I will know my savior
When I come to him
By the mark
Where the nails have been
May claim a crown of jewels
But the king of heaven
Can be told from
The prince of fools
Where the nails have been
By the sign
Upon his precious skin
I will know my savior
When I come to him
By the mark
Where the nails have been
Where they made him suffer so
All my sin was paid for
A long, long time ago
Where the nails have been
By the sign
Upon his precious skin
I will know my savior
When I come to him
By the mark
Where the nails have been
When I come to him
By the mark
Where the nails have been

I've been listening to this song for over ten years and I only just noticed that in some live versions, David changes the words of his harmony part to 'I have seen the sign upon his precious skin'. Which changes the whoooole meaning of the song, from a single voice pining for the rapture, to one voice pining for the rapture and another voice pining right back from beyond the grave. It makes the weird chase-and-loop harmonies all the spookier.
