Poor Shirley Lyrics
Poor Shirley
She must hide her tears
For nobody wants to see them
Surely it will break her heart
Time passes as she waits for a friend
We'll take all the doubtful ones in the fight
And make them hold off 'til the spring
Take hold of their hallowed souls
And save them from pain, yea yea
All of the pain
Save ourselves from all of the pain
Dearly held are the friends
Left in the years and lost in the war
Dearly held are the loves
Save for the ones you lose on your own
We'll take all the doubtful ones in the fight
And make them hold off 'til the spring
Take hold of their hallowed souls
And save them from pain, yea yea
All of the pain
Save ourselves from all of the pain
Yes we will
Save ourselves from all of the pain
Stars will light up the lonely nights Harbor lights
Making us believe in the love
So struck by the hope of the harmony
Leaving the sorrow
Gently, gently
Poor Shirley She must hide her tears
For nobody wants to see them
Surely she will win a heart
Time passes as she waits for the wind
We'll take all the doubtful ones in the fight
And make them hold off 'til the spring
Take hold of their hallowed souls
And save them from pain, yea yea
All of the pain
Save ourselves from all of the pain
Yes we will
Save ourselves from all of the pain
Yes we will
Save ourselves from all of the pain
Oooh,Oooh,Oooh...
Save ourselves from all of the pain
Yes we will
Save ourselves from all of the pain
Yes we will
Save ourselves from all of the pain and the sorrow
We'll save ourselves from the pain and the sorrow
Save ourselves, save ourselves
She must hide her tears
For nobody wants to see them
Surely it will break her heart
Time passes as she waits for a friend
And make them hold off 'til the spring
Take hold of their hallowed souls
And save them from pain, yea yea
All of the pain

Save ourselves from all of the pain and the sorrow
We'll save ourselves from the pain and the sorrow
Save ourselves, save ourselves

This is my favorite CC song so I posted the lyrics in case someone has some insight on the lyrics. I like the lyrics but I'm not sure what they mean. Is this about the pain of war? love? What does he mean "we'll take all the doubtful ones in the fight and make them hold off til spring. take hold of their hallowed souls and save them from pain?"
My take on this song has always been that Shirley is an Eleanor Rigby type, and the song is about hope for the lonely and lost. The sum of the lyrics seem to point to that. It is a powerful message, perhaps open to private interpretation.

A very melodic tune, with or without that message. I hope this answer was worth the 6-year wait!

this song I listened to so many times while on deployment, as it struck a cord in me. Reading the lyrics it seems to mean poor Shirley is waiting for a special friend who is away or possibly at war and is hopeful that he will return in the spring and whom will make good on the relationship. the phrase "we'll take all the doubtful ones in the fight and make them hold off til spring. take hold of their hallowed souls and save them from pain" might mean that any "suitors" who she comes across will be...

She must hide her tears For nobody wants to see them Surely it will break her heart Time passes as she waits for a friend (sad, lonely and brokenhearted she needs a shoulder to lean on)
We'll take all the doubtful ones in the fight (Friends will step up and help those who doubt that things will turn around for them) And make them hold off 'til the spring (and help them hang in there until until new, promising beginnings arise) Take hold of their hallowed souls And save them from pain All of the pain Save ourselves from all of the pain (...protect and care for them until then)
Dearly held are the friends Left in the years and lost in the war (good friends who have faded away, moved on, or just given up to the struggles of this world) Dearly held are the loves Save for the ones you lose on your own (love lost due to your own actions are painful to reflect upon and not often recalled dearly)
Stars will light up the lonely nights Harbor lights Making us believe in the love So struck by the hope of the harmony Leaving the sorrow Gently
(A look at how things will be when the loneliness has passed and new love is found)
Poor Shirley She must hide her tears For nobody wants to see them Surely she will win a heart Time passes as she waits for the wind (wind of change)
