They are at the point of the relationship where they are so ready to let go of each other that the slightest conflict will cause them to break up. Because they love each other so much, they are afraid that if they do let each other go, they will regret it. The guy is contemplating whether or not he should do it but he is "afraid to let her go." He realizes he's being sucked into "sinking sand" and can't do it when "you call me by my name".
