She's Your Baby Lyrics

Janey came back from the stand
Smiling
With the writing of Kafka in hand
And a bunny in a can
Slipping and sliding
You feel yourself asking her
Why would you want me to try?
Squeezing your wrist and she's pulling you closer
Down where the devils are dying with laughter
Then led to a place where there's no form of pleasure
She blows you a kiss from her lips

She's your baby
She's your baby
She's your baby

Those below us can not be renounced
'Cause they're talking
And for once I wish they'd shut up their mouths
Lock their doors and stay in the house
And while you're inside there
You might want to question the fact
That you're not quite the same
And look to the room where she's keeping so quiet
A million layers of crust and deposit
Blanket the seasons and bury the reasons
You told her that this was for good

She's your baby
She's your baby
She's your baby

There was an interview with Ween one time wherein the interviewer just went down the White Pepper song list and asked them what it meant. When asked about this song, Deaner said that he didn't know what it meant, he never asked Gener, who wrote and sang the song. Dean did say that he thought it was about Gene's daughter. I've run on that assumption ever since.

The tone in which the song is presented is one of tenderness. It's a lovely song, especially as he invokes the image of a carnival of some sort. That is an interesting note about Kafka's "Metamorphosis," by the way.

The second verse sounds like a fight between Gener and his wife, with one of them accusing the other of having changed. "You might want to question the fact/ That you're not quite the same."

At the end of the fight Gener goes to his daughter's room "where she's keeping so quiet". The "million layers of crust and deposit" could be the image of a child's messy room, or it could even stand for the persistence of a stagnant or ugly relationship over time.

"Bury the reasons" - looks like he knows he can't explain his fights away when he "told her that this was for good." Now it looks like the family, his daughter's home, is splitting up. And she's his baby.

Gene and his wife Sarah Poten divorced not long after the release of the album.

Sorry for being so long-winded.

My Interpretation

That is a very interesting opinion. I always thought it was just about some girl but you've got some interesting points. nice syd barret name as well

The line "with the writings of Kafka in hand" most likely refers to Franz Kafka's most famous piece "The Metamorphosis" in which Gregor (the protagonist) undrgoes a horrible transformation-into a bug. I think the reference is depicting the metamorphosis of a relationship, inwhich an unwanted change is happening.

One of the most beautiful melodies I've ever heard...

InterpretationalUst... i think the kafka-reference is more about the whole "kafka-universe" : the absurdity , no way out, surrealism and in general not making any sense of the situation you're in. That in mind, the song is about the wonder of being with the girl you love and the fact the SHE love YOU.. the absurd cosmos that love exists in. JC > am i making any sense at all?

very beautiful song...

Someone already mentioned Kafka's Metamorphosis...however, many of his books can fit into her hand because they could be interpreted as his lifelong tension between bachelorhood and marriage. Now about the bunnies in a can. This phrase has always reminded me of a short story by Julio Cortazar titled "A Letter to a Lady in Paris". It is essentially a suicide note.
A million layers of crust and deposit could be the emotional damage and baggage we accumulate in our lives.
