The Last Page Lyrics
Hover through the foggy vapours,
Until I see you in a dream,
Singing animals to sleep...
By the way, it's over without you.
I'm in the way, I'm in the way.
I'm in the way, I'm in the way.
Lights out to midnight.
Sleep all day
(yeah, yeah, yeah)
(Sha la la la)
Dark and quiet, only the owls are watching,
Only the sky is up and I'm leaving for a place
(yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
From Another time, just to be near you, just to be near you, just to be near you
(sha la la la la la la la la..)
I'm in the way, I'm in the way.
I'm in the way, I'm in the way, I'm in the way.
I'm in the way, I'm in the way...
Don't become the one you hated.
Death is absolutely safe, billion bibles mark the last page.
I've gotta move through the days without you here
I get a shock, shock hurts to heal
I've gotta move through the weeks without you here
I get a shock, shock hurts to heal
I've gotta move through the months without you here
I get a shock, shock hurts to heal
I've gotta move through the weeks without you here,
I get a shock, shock hurts to heal
I've gotta move through the weeks without you here
I get a shock, shock hurts to heal
Shock, shock hurts to heal
Hurts to heal
Hurts to heal

Half of me thinks this is just a dirge, of sorts, mourning the death of someone (as publicized, her father) but i also think there are parts that could prove to be about suicide? the stanza that talks about leaving for a place from another time, just to be near to the person who has died is the most specific example, but the next part, which says "i'm in the way, i'm in the way..." says that there are parts of her that aren't able to submit to suicide, so she's in the way of her own suicide, and then she goes on to convince herself that suicide is not an answer and that the world she's tried to create for herself, one of risk and chance and truly living, is a better place. do, despite her pain and mourning and depression, she just moves on anyway, and deals with the pain of healing and recovering from the death of someone very dear to her.
if this makes no sense, i apologize. i'm drunk. at any rate, its a beautiful song, and the break down at the end gets me every time. love it.
I think the parts about leaving for a place from another time is about memories more than anything... I can't really see the suicide theme, but that's just my interpretation anyway...
I've thought about the "I'm in the way" part a lot, 'cause I couldn't quite figure out how that fitted with the rest. I think it might be her getting used to the idea that he's gone, she's still alive, and searching for someone's who's no longer there, or in a "better place" (if you believe that) is like being in the way. Like the people we loose, they don't want us with them, they want us to go on with our lives.
The "outro" is so good. The entire song gets to me, but that part especially. It hits a little too close to home.
when i first heard this song, i thought it was the most bizarre love song she could have ever written to her lover.
but then i realized, it's definitely to her father.
it's really person, but the ending is relatable to anyone suffering a distance (such as here and post-death) with someone so dearly loved.

i can only take metric and emily haines in general in small doses because a lot feels reiterated and reiterated, but this song is really nice. i've had this album for awhile but just re-discovered this song. i'm in love with it right now.
I actually think this song could be about suicide, too, specifically the lines:
Lights out to midnight. Sleep all day (yeah, yeah, yeah) (Sha la la la)
Dark and quiet, only the owls are watching, Only the sky is up and I'm leaving for a place (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah) From Another time, just to be near you, just to be near you, just to be near you (sha la la la la la la la la..)
Not to mention "death is absolutely safe." Perhaps it's less about the actual act and more about the ideation of suicide.
"Dark and quiet, only the owls are watching, Only the sky is up and I'm leaving for a place From Another time, just to be near you, just to be near you, just to be near you" i love the way she sings those lines, it evokes so many images in my mind, this may be one of the darkest songs on the album. i could understand the suicide theme, or just depression in general.
"I'm ON the way, I'm ON MY way"
"I'm gonna ROLL through the weeks"
I always here roll rather than move. this song is amazing though. the end just rolls along and along, SO good
It's about mourning and trying to move on, clearly.
first off, emily haines did this solo project after the death of her father because a lot of the lyrics she wrote about it weren't metric material in her opinion so that's what a lot of the record is centered around. this song is definitely one of the few that is very obviously about that topic, though.
