Hothouse Flowers Lyrics
Hothouse flowers grow lush and bright
In tiny little towns across this big night
Hothouse flowers all kissing for fun
Slipping into stores then out in a run, singing
Laments and rowdy songs, hymns about sin
High lives and reels, a tarantell? violin
Other people's apartments and couches and clothes
Young again, lost again
Here we are, here we go
Hothouse flowers growing up so strange
Falling asleep with your boots on and waking aged
Hothouse flowers all missing their friends
Calling up late at night and hanging up on them,
Screaming
Laments and rowdy songs, hymns about sin
High lives and reels, your tarantell? violin
Other people's apartments and couches and clothes
Young again, lost again
Here we are, here we go
Screaming
Laments and rowdy songs, hymns about sin
High lives and reels, your tarantell? violin
Other people's apartments and couches and clothes
Young again, lost again
Here we are, here we go
Hothouse flowers crushed flat to the glass
You get hit pretty hard moving so damn fast
Hothouse flowers struggling past first bloom
You grow pretty damn twitchy never leaving your room
I think those lights down there are the lights from little towns
I think those lights down there are the lights from little towns
Hothouse flowers grow lush and bright
In tiny little towns across this big night
Hothouse flowers all kissing for luck
Stepping out all dressed, returning all fucked up
Hothouse flowers grow lush and bright
In tiny little towns across this big night
Hothouse flowers happens all the time
Tiny little towns living great big lives
In tiny little towns across this big night
Hothouse flowers all kissing for fun
Slipping into stores then out in a run, singing
Laments and rowdy songs, hymns about sin
High lives and reels, a tarantell? violin
Other people's apartments and couches and clothes

Hothouse flowers could mean a few things. A hothouse is a greenhouse, a sheltered place where plants can grow, thrive, but still be confined. Its a song about breaking out.
Which still applies when my cousin told me that a hothouse is also another name for a venue. So, kids who stay out and party all night, or sheltered kids breaking out. And getting caught, too.
I was wondering what this song was about for a long time. Then I went to a World/Inferno show, where they performed it and suddenly it clicked. This song is about the punks! This song is about heading out to a show, staying out way too late and getting back home a total wreck, which is exactly how that night went for me. I literally fell asleep with my boots on and woke up feeling aged when the night was over. It also touches on the way a punk show operates, where everyones crushed together as a big crowd. If you've ever gone to a concert with a mohawk, you know what "stepping out all dressed and returning all fucked up" is all about. But mainly, I think its about people coming together from small towns and cities far and wide to share a good time.
lets see, what else.
"You get hit pretty hard moving so damn fast": Probably refering to slamdancing. "singing Laments and rowdy songs, hymns about sin": what a lot of punk rock songs are about
There are other songs that touch on the punk community on this albumn too, such as "Me and the Mad Monkettes" and "So long to the circus"
It's also about the strange way we all grow up. Some of us spent our childhoods outside, others(like Terricloth) were somewhat antisocial and spent our time indoors for the most part until we hit our teens, which is where we start acting on our punk instincts(shoplifting, sometimes running away from home, others try to endure and end up spending their time in their rooms, until they do something crazy).
