Sophia Lyrics

Five o'clock and a fire escape symphony
Spilling out across the road and the square
And the sky's the same as your own do ya think of me?
Do the parks and trees and the leaves reach you there?
After the rain, in the lonely hours he haunts me,
Callin out again and again

Sophia, Sophia, I'm burning, I'm burning
It's a fire, a fire I cannot put out
Sophia, Sophia I'm learning that some things I can't go without
And one of them is him

Now I walk the streets like a stranger in my hometown
Learn the language from the words when I speak
But he changed me I'm his ghost since he came around
Now I count the hours and the days in the weeks
Passion and silence, every word, every rhyme a measure
It's the science of the soul
And his books they breathe a reason
And now I wanna know

Sophia, Sophia, I'm burning, I'm burning
It's a fire, a fire I cannot put out
Sophia, Sophia I'm learning that some things I can't go without
And one of them is him

And you, with your newborn eyes,
Have you ever loved a man lke I love him?
Do you hurt but still feel alive, like never before?
Oh Sophia
Sophia

Sophia, Sophia, I'm burning, I'm burning
It's a fire, a fire I cannot put out
Sophia, Sophia I'm learning that some things I can't go without
I, can't, go without him

I listen to this song every day. We can all agree that it is amazing. But, c'mon people ; let's get down to it.

What does it really mean? Several lines in the song escape me. For example,

What do you think she means by "fire escape symphony" ?

And, another thing; it sounds to me as though she says "every word, every line a measure" - not "every word every rhyme". Some lyrics sites say "every word every time" -- but I think that's just plain wrong.

By the way, I find it fantastic that she makes "Sophia" and "It's a fire" sound almost indistinguishable.

Sounds to me like shes trying to justify an abusive relationship to her child "He changed me Im his ghost since he came around" "Do you hurt but still feel alive like never before"

Shes talking to her child and saying "I know its not healthy, I know hes destructive to me but I love him, Im obsessed with him. Youve never been in love like this so dont judge me"

Thats always the feeling ive got from it anyway.

I have to say I prefer the origninal version of this song, before she added the strings and stuff. It was much more powerful then. Still it's a great song that if you hear at the right (or wrong) moment can bring tears to your eyes

I think you are right kaos_princess the whole child thing really does make sense. sophia being her child, and she is explaining how she felt, and how she never stopped feeling like that.

a lovely song ~ i do love the way she makes sopiha and its a fire sound oh so similar you have to hear it twice......magic x

I don't know what this song is about from the artist's perspective. I think it's one of those songs where you read into it what you want, because it becomes personal to everyone who hears it. It's very rare to hear something this beautiful.

It's about a friend of Nerina's, called Sophia. Nerina is 'explaining' love to Sophia (in the most powerful and non-cliche way that i've ever heard).

I disagree with kaos_princess about it being an abusive relationship, it's more like an expression of the irresistable side of love. I'm not going to elaborate on that though, because my main point is to share what I think she means by "fire escape symphony".

My impression is that it's a local thing, in the late afternoon at 5pm, with all the neighbours hanging out in their fire escapes, chatting to people from block to block, seeing their kids playing in the alley below, hanging clothes and just generally, a lazy afternoon scene that's cozy in a orange hue.

Symphony referring to the cackle or anti-cacophony of the neighbourhood, the comfortable buzz in the air. All in all, a comforting, reassuring imagery pops up when she says "Fire escape symphony"
