I think this song has a very general meaning to it. Hes asking questions to someone about there life overall hes asking did you find what you were looking for in life..after all you went through after every memory every face you met or word you spoke did you find that meaning to your life. Whoever it is answers no, and in a self reflective state he puts the world in perspective for himself and that person...

I think this song is about a couple after they broke up, and a guy is questioning his ex lovers new needs in a partner and wants to know if his ex is happy now that he is out of her life.

The guy still thinks the couple is compatible and tries to reason out what she wanted but in the end

he clearly gives up on his old love. its so disappointing.
Taken from my personal context, i've come to the realisation that the chorus ("Well I'm so sorry. So sorry. I'm so terribly, terribly sorry.") is actually in relation to the rest of the lyrics.
He's talking to his partner, but only asking questions - not giving any information. This, in turn, ends up frustrating the partner. So he's overwhemingly apologetic because he didn't realise what he was doing wrong. If you look, virtually every single line, other than the chorus, is a question. I was thinking about the lyrics the other day and suddenly this particular way of looking at it hit me.
Each person takes their own view on it, though. It could be completely different from person to person.
