Descending Lyrics
the river i'm bound to be found in
a rope chosen bound for the hang
when i'm blinded i think i see everything
convincing myself again
this god that i worship (a faded reflection)
this demon i blame (a flickering flame)
conspire as one, exactly the same
ITS EXACTLY THE SAME
DESCENDING
to never recover the pieces to all that we've lost
RECOVER...THE PIECES LOST
THE PIECES...TO ALL WE'VE LOST
i shudder to think of the consequence
its blasphemy simple and true
the tragic protaganist torments
convincing myself again
this god that i worship (a faded reflection)
this demon i blame (a flickering flame)
conspire as one, exactly the same
ITS EXACTLY THE SAME
DESCENDING
to never recover the pieces to all that we've lost

this song totally kicks ass. but i read on lamb of gods website that the songs about alcoholism. and it fits too
"this god that i worship, this demon i blame, conspire as one, its exactly the same"
that is basically referring to how alcohol is "this god that i worship" before you start drinking it and when you first start, BUT in hindsight, its "this demon i blame" because it causes all your problems, but then its "this god that i worship" again because it seems to fix those problems. and its exactly the same because well...its alcohol it just has its ups and downs.
oh, and "when i'm blinded i think i see everything" probably means that when hes drunk he feels he knows everything and is always right and does no wrong because thats what alcohol does to you. atleast thats what that line means to me.
@burnthepriest17 man that's a bummer because I always thought it was much deeper than that. I always heard it as the inner struggle to trust Christian beliefs to be true while more and more terrible things happen around you. God being the demon you blame for letting good people die young. "The tragic protagonist torments" but if they said it's about alcoholism struggles, I guess I get that too

OMG IT'S ORGASMIC. when randy's first screaming DESCENDINGGGGG... gosh pure joy.
"when i'm blinded i think i see everything convincing myself again" amazing line.
and yes IT IS ABOUT WHATEVER YOU THINK IT'S ABOUT. that's the point of music I think.. everyone takes a different message, everyone percieves it differently.. I see how it can be about someone you lost and dealing with grief, never ending grief. and I can also see how it is about alcoholism.. "this god that i worship, this demon i blame.." its a never ending circle.
Lamb of God, i have to say, just get better and better. Their music is the air I breathe. love them
"IT IS ABOUT WHATEVER YOU THINK IT'S ABOUT"
"IT IS ABOUT WHATEVER YOU THINK IT'S ABOUT"
I absolutely agree with you, 100%... The artists might (and usually do) have something in mind when writing a song, they can't control how it's perceived by others, nor should they.

That said, seeing how others perceive a song can be interesting (which is why I come to this site...). :)

like most other people say this songs about addiction to alcohol. my thoughts on the lines "i shudder to think of the consequence its blasphemy simple and true the tragic protaganist torments convincing myself again" my thoughts on that is that he doesn't like to think about the consequence of drinking alcohol, and he knows that it's bad to do. a protaganist is a main character so he keeps trying to convince himself that the alcohol before and after he drinks it is the same stuff and it has its ups and downs and its a big circle of problems, etc. so he should quit. that's what makes sense to me
The first time I heard this I thought it was about how religion is bad/ a tool to use people. It seems like its about alcohol, but I'm going to offer my interpretation.
'when I'm blind and I think I see everything' -Religious people have a lot of belief, but its all false. 'this god that I worship (a faded reflection) this demon I blame (a flickering flame) conspire as one, exactly the same ITS EXACTLY THE SAME' -When he says they conspire as one, He means the church uses people's love of god and fear of demons to get them to do as they please. They are exactly the same - a tool of religion. a faded reflection means god is made in man's image. 'DESCENDING to never recover the pieces to all that we've lost RECOVER...THE PIECES LOST THE PIECES...TO ALL WE'VE LOST' -Descending in general means religion is putting us back, preventing humanity from advancing. 'The pieces we've lost' is anything lost to religion- old information or ideas destroyed because they counter the church, or people lost to religious wars. 'I shudder to think of the consequence it's blasphemy simple and true the tragic protaganist torments convincing myself again' -The consequence of speaking out against religion (the blasphemy) is usually excommunication. In the days of the church's strength, they convinced Galileo to abandon his ideas (the idea the earth isn't the center of the universe)that countered theirs at the threat of excommunication. The protagonist torments because he suffers silently, going along with what he doesn't believe in, or he speaks out and suffers publicly. This is where I think the first 2 lines 'the river I'm bound to be found in a rope chosen bound for the hang' make sense. If he speaks out he will likely be killed.
fuck i love this song, i just bought the album a couple days ago and this is one of my favourite songs. I think this song is about having no one to turn to except darkness " this god that i worshipped( a faded reflection ) , this demon i blame ( a flickering flame ) " And its about losing something that you cant replace " to never recover the peices to all that we've lost. "
I understand what your getting at, and it does make sense, but what do you think the "its exactly the same"
here is my 2 cents, I think what the song has to do with no matter what you you choose, or what he had chosen, everything happends the way it was ment too, maybe the song has something to do with fate. I really dont know
just go to www.lamb-of-god.com > bio > near the end it says stuff about sacrament
kool, thanks
it's actually about addictions to acohol and whatnot. it says so on their web site.
hey forever_haunted, maybe you should get a life...?
