The Robin's Jar Lyrics
Once we had a robin
In our backyard
It was already dead
But we were so sure
That things weren't gone too far
So we prayed to God above
That He'd bring it back to us
So we put it in a jar
And waited and waited
And Mama made us bury it
Mama made us bury it in the backyard
I wished to be just like my best friend
She was the brightest star in the room
Yeah, but we didn't know what we had
With the world pressing in
On her backyard
She fell backwards
We prayed to God above
That He'd bring her back to us
So we put her in a box
We put her in a box
And waited
For something to happen
But nothing happened
And Mama made me bury her
Mama made me bury her in the backyard
In our backyard
It was already dead
But we were so sure
That things weren't gone too far
That He'd bring it back to us
So we put it in a jar
And waited and waited
Mama made us bury it in the backyard
She was the brightest star in the room
Yeah, but we didn't know what we had
On her backyard
She fell backwards
That He'd bring her back to us
So we put her in a box
We put her in a box
And waited
For something to happen
But nothing happened
Mama made me bury her in the backyard

This song is about the lost childhood. With the world pressing in means, adulthood is pressing into the lifes of the girls, playing in the backyard. They are trying to preserve it in a Jar, and hope for its revival, but its dead, and mommy wants them to bury it. The girlfriend, the brightest star in the room, fell backwards into adulthood, i guesss that means that adulthood caught her unexpected. So the Robin represents their childhood, their happiness and their joy.
The best friend in the song died. 'We put her in a box' - i.e. a coffin; 'We prayed to God to bring her back to us' - wishing she were alive again. The 'Mama made me bury her in the backyard' part is a nice macabre twist to it, connecting back to, and strengthening the parallel between the best friend and the robin.
I cried the first time I listened to this song. It's so beautifully dark.
