Nashville Tennessee Lyrics
From the heart of the Southern Downs, to the North-East London reservoirs,
From the start, the land scaped my sound, before I'd ever been to America.
And if I knew anybody who played pedal steel guitar,
I'd get them in my band and then my band would get real far,
But I was raised in middle England, and not in Nashville Tennessee,
And the only person in my band is me.
A simple scale on an old guitar, and a punk rock sense of honesty.
I cannot fail, I've got this far with no knowledge of mid-west geography.
And if I knew anywhere where I could drive in a straight line
For hours in the desert, I'd drive for hours at a time.
But I was raised in middle England, not in Nashville Tennessee,
And the only person in this car is me.
And yes I'm in four-four time, and yes I use cheap cheap rhymes,
But I try to make a sound my own.
I know I don't break new ground, many have travelled this sound,
But I try to make it sound like home.
Well I've been to Texas state, I didn't think it was that fucking great,
And Nebraska is just a bunch of songs,
Holloway and Hampshire where I belong.
And I don't know anybody who plays pedal steel guitar,
All the city roads are twisted and I do not own a car.
I was raised in middle England, not in Nashville Tennessee,
And the only thing I'm offering is me.
From the start, the land scaped my sound, before I'd ever been to America.
I'd get them in my band and then my band would get real far,
But I was raised in middle England, and not in Nashville Tennessee,
And the only person in my band is me.

"This song is about not acting like you're from America....I think people who do that are really fucking lame"
Great song.

Fucking Brilliant
Frank is trying to say that he wishes he was in Nashville, Tennessee, home of country music. But instead he is in England. He wishes that he had someone in his band that played steel guitar because that would improve the sound of his songs but he is just a solo artist at the time he wrote this song.

I don't think he is trying to say that he wishes he was American and it certainly has nothing to do with bands "selling out" like someone else mentioned.
@alecw19 I disagree with this. I think he is really just talking about how his sound is a product of who he is and where he came from (England).

To sum it up, "From the start, the land scaped my sound"

I don't think he is wishing he was from Nashville Tennessee, as much as he is acknowledging that if he were from somewhere else (such as Nashville), he would likely have a different sound because his sound stems from who he is. In other words, he might've known someone who played pedal steel guitar, which would've led to a different sound and style. But he isn't saying he wishes that that were (or weren't) the case.
I think he is talking more about bands selling out to american record labels (based in nashville) more than he is talking about people that actually try and literally act american. I think some people miss that very basic point of the song. I don't think he likes the beatles...
