Shrine to Fast Goodbyes Lyrics

Drinks aside, it's time we tried to stay somewhere.
Take my only souvenir, hold it up high, toss it off the roof.
If it should break, tell me how it sounds when it lands.

Steal time when there isn't enough,
Turn the wheel, I'm backing it up.
Don't feel old, hope I'm backing up.
Don't feel old
Bloodshot eye, a ringing in the left ear.
1975 ringing in my right ear.

Our simple rules failed each other,
We're close to used to being wrong.

Now it's gone, get undressed, feeling hopeless
Work weary world, see no sign of relief
Still they find time to complain of a shortage
while the excess collects at their feet.

Always say that we will, but we don't.
Always say that we did, when we did nothing.

Drinks aside, the day today is the monotone.
Now there's nowhere left to go
Build a shrine to fast goodbyes
What's the mistake?
What's the mistake?

Steal time when there isn't enough,
Turn the wheel, I'm backing it up.
Don't feel old, hope I'm backing up.
Don't feel old
Bloodshot eye, ringing in the left ear,
1975 ringing in my right ear.

Our simple rules failed each other,
We're both reduced to being wrong.

Here and it's gone get undressed, feeling hopeless.
Work weary world, see no sign of relief.
Still they find time to complain of a shortage,
while the excess collects at their feet.

Above, the sun rising late hasn't set yet.
Work weary world, too tired now to ever sleep.
From watching you all complain of a shortage,
while the excess collects at your feet.
The excess collects at your feet.

Between a church hymn and a haiku
It is Rawalpindi Blues

love it. does anyone have a studio recording? i only have the version of her singing it live, (which is awesome still) but anyways...

"Drinks aside, it's time we tried to stay somewhere. Take my only souvenir, hold it up high, toss it off the roof. If it should break, tell me how it sounds when it lands."

i think the souvenir is her heart, im not sure why maybe because i automically associate things breaking with a broken heart.

i could never dissect every single lyric of this song and explain everything (and i wouldn't want to) but i think this song is about a boring and depressing relationship full of routines and re-runs over and over, its dark and its bleak and both of them want out but neither are willing to end it. just the song overall makes me think this.

i'm pretty sure there is no studio version of this .... which really is a shame, because it is beautiful

Oh what I would do to see Emily Haines solo Live :(

All of her solo stuff is so melancholy and beautiful.

I think this song is about trying to establish something, most likely a relationship, but things keep making it not happen.
