Gone Away Lyrics
Far away you've gone, and left me here
So cold without you, so lonely dear
May June July I count the time
Every minute I go takes the smell of your clothes further away
'Cause you've gone away
Where there isn't a telephone wire
Still I wait by the phone
You don't even write to say goodbye
Goodbye
I have saved every piece of paper
Like grocery lists & note cards
To do lists & race scores
So just in case you change your mind
& come back, I've kept everything safe
While you're gone away
Where there isn't a telephone wire
Still I wait by the phone
You don't even write to say goodbye
Get me out get me off
This is a ride going nowhere
But somewhere that I despise
Going nowhere to end up with a tearful
I don't wanna go on
With these pieces of paper
That you've left behind for
This is a ride going nowhere
But somewhere that I despise
Going nowhere to end up with a tearful
I don't wanna go on
With these pieces of paper
To keep me company in my old age
While you're gone away
Where there isn't a telephone wire
Still I wait by the phone
Why don't you write to say goodbye
Goodbye
So cold without you, so lonely dear
May June July I count the time
Every minute I go takes the smell of your clothes further away
Where there isn't a telephone wire
Still I wait by the phone
You don't even write to say goodbye
Goodbye
Like grocery lists & note cards
To do lists & race scores
So just in case you change your mind
& come back, I've kept everything safe
Where there isn't a telephone wire
Still I wait by the phone
You don't even write to say goodbye
This is a ride going nowhere
But somewhere that I despise
Going nowhere to end up with a tearful
I don't wanna go on
With these pieces of paper
That you've left behind for
But somewhere that I despise
Going nowhere to end up with a tearful
I don't wanna go on
With these pieces of paper
To keep me company in my old age
Where there isn't a telephone wire
Still I wait by the phone
Why don't you write to say goodbye
Goodbye

I cant figure out if like he just got up and left or died. Because she says there arent any telephones where he is and it seems like he left everything abrubtly.
the first time she sings "Get me out get me off This is a ride going nowhere But somewhere that I despise Going nowhere to end up with a tearful I don't wanna go on With these pieces of paper"
the last line is "that you left behind"
Though it can go both ways, I think that its more likely that the case is that he died. I believe this because I feel like the statement "'Cause you've gone away, where there isn't a telephone wire" would seem irrelevant to what's going on and weird to just throw out there unless it was to give the listener the hint that he's dead, rather than just moved off to some remote place. Also, it seems that it is impossible for the narrator to move on, and I feel that moving on after a relationship would be much harder after someone you loved has died than had left you. But that's just what I think.
The person in the song - who isn't a lover - committed suicide.
