yeah i agree with lori1991 probably a relationship where neither person is willing to admit problems and are living blindly in this relationship. "we could never have us, because i've never had you" probably means that he is saying that he never had her-he had her but they didn't know each other and he never had HER- he had this person who he didn't know. I think he is saying "without me knowing who you are, there cannot be a relationship" sorry that was so long p.s "we could never have HAD us, because i've never had you" not that the word "had" is significant but i looked in the lyrics book that came with the cd and thats what it says
